How is Ferrari doing in Barcelona?
While in FP1 of the Spanish Grand Prix the Ferraris appeared fairly competitive, more doubts emerged at the end of FP2 in Barcelona, where Charles Leclerc finished fifth and Lewis Hamilton eleventh. In particular, the race pace shown by both Ferraris seemed problematic when compared to their rivals.
Fred Vasseur’s take
Speaking to Sky UK at the end of the day, Frederic Vasseur summed up Ferrari’s Friday as follows: “We had a very good pace in the morning, while we struggled a bit more in the afternoon. Charles put in a decent lap before the mistake at Turn 7. We struggled a bit more at the start of each stint during the long runs, and this applied to us as well as a couple of other teams. The track was very dirty, with lots of marbles, and once you went off the racing line, it was quite difficult to recover.”
Fred Vasseur was asked about Lewis Hamilton’s remarks, as the driver was clearly unhappy after the second free practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix: “Today’s radio comments were a bit extreme. Lewis also had an excellent stint on the softs, with lap times similar to the top two. That means the car wasn’t as horrible as he said on the radio.”
The Ferrari team principal then reiterated a point that is particularly important to him: “I’ll repeat myself — the comments made over the radio while they’re in the car are not a drama for me, as long as we go back to the motorhome and have a constructive debrief. That’s what matters.”
