Ferrari’s ADUO-2 power unit is expected to become one of the major technical talking points of the 2026 Italian Grand Prix at Monza. The updated specification, which could be introduced for Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc at Ferrari’s home race, includes development work on the combustion engine and turbocharger while also offering an early indication of the more extensive programme being prepared in Maranello for 2027.
Expectations are therefore particularly high around Ferrari’s new engine specification as the team attempts to respond after missed opportunities in Hungary and the Netherlands. The Italian Grand Prix could become an important moment in Ferrari’s attempt to reduce Mercedes’ advantage in the Constructors’ Championship and keep its title ambitions alive.
Ferrari faces a crucial Italian Grand Prix at Monza
The Italian Grand Prix at Monza could prove decisive for Ferrari’s season. After the enthusiasm generated by the unexpected victories in Barcelona and at Silverstone, the Maranello team failed to maximise important opportunities in Hungary and at Zandvoort.
Charles Leclerc’s Silverstone victory had also been helped by the technical problem that slowed Andrea Kimi Antonelli while the Mercedes driver was attempting to close the gap to the Ferrari. Those results had raised hopes of a stronger championship challenge, but Ferrari now needs another response at its home Grand Prix.
Following the Dutch Grand Prix, Ferrari sits 87 points behind Mercedes in the Constructors’ Championship. The Scuderia therefore needs to reverse the trend if it is to continue dreaming of ending a championship drought that stretches back to its last Constructors’ title in 2008.
Monza could provide an opportunity. Andrea Kimi Antonelli will have to serve a grid penalty at the Italian Grand Prix, potentially complicating Mercedes’ weekend, while the characteristics of the circuit could also influence the competitive order. Red Bull should not be underestimated, while McLaren could potentially be disadvantaged by its relatively weak aerodynamic efficiency on the long straights of the high-speed Italian venue.
Interest surrounding Ferrari will be especially intense, with demand for the 2026 Italian Grand Prix at Monza already highlighting the enormous expectations surrounding Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc and the Maranello team.
Ferrari ADUO-2 engine upgrade expected for Monza
Much of the attention will focus on the Ferrari ADUO-2 power unit, which the Scuderia is expected to introduce at its home Grand Prix. Ferrari has been granted two development opportunities under the ADUO mechanism, with the second specification representing the next stage of its attempt to close the engine-performance deficit.
The importance of that development has increased following the latest FIA ADUO power unit assessment, which underlined the scope available to Ferrari to continue developing its engine package.
According to The Race, the new specification includes changes to both the internal combustion engine and the turbocharger. However, the ADUO-2 unit is also significant because some of the work represents an early step towards the broader power unit development programme Ferrari is pursuing for the 2027 Formula 1 season.
ADUO-2 offers an early glimpse of Ferrari’s 2027 power unit work
Part of that longer-term development work is already sufficiently advanced to be incorporated into Ferrari’s 2026 package. The new specification is therefore not simply intended to improve the current campaign: it also provides an opportunity for Maranello to transfer elements of its wider 2027 development programme onto the present power unit.
Ferrari is expected to introduce the specification alongside the fourth engine of the season for both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. Because this remains within the permitted seasonal allocation, using the new power unit would not result in a grid penalty for either Ferrari driver.
The power unit rotation would consequently leave Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton with four specifications available across their respective pools: two standard units used earlier in the season before Ferrari began exploiting the ADUO concessions, one ADUO-1 specification and the new ADUO-2 version.
That could give Ferrari greater flexibility during the closing stages of the championship while allowing the team to make use of its latest development at one of the most power-sensitive circuits on the Formula 1 calendar. Monza’s long straights and extensive periods at full throttle make the Italian Grand Prix an especially significant venue for evaluating any progress made by the Maranello power unit department.
For Ferrari, the stakes extend beyond simply delivering additional performance for Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc in front of the tifosi. ADUO-2 represents another stage in the team’s attempt to reduce its current deficit while simultaneously advancing development that could influence the direction of its 2027 engine programme.
