As reported initially by Motorsport Italy, and later confirmed by the International version of the website, Scuderia Ferrari has decided to use a triangular shaped airbox for its new Formula 1 project, without the two horns that set the SF21 apart from the rest of the grid in 2021.
It therefore seems that the Maranello teams plans to shift direction from the oval airbox conceput it used in the 2021 Formula 1 championship with the goal of providing less obstruction to the airflow destined for the rear wing. However, this decision does not mean that the Italian side’s designers need to identify a solution to provide cool air to the power unit and its ancillaries, that was catered for by the outer channels in the oval airbox design.

Taking into consideration the shape of the sidepods which had to undergo an extensive redesign for the new generation of Formula 1 challengers, Ferrari could have decided to use the various radiators and electronics housed around the power unit and in the sidepods. This could happen as a result to a change in the placement of the upper Side Impact Protections Spars (SIPS) for the new season, as the rules state the need for them to be located at least 60mm higher than in previous championships. This all but rules out the use of the high inlet design that was first introduced by Scuderia Ferrari five years ago and was immediately also adopted by the rest of the grid, as every Formula 1 car featured the design in 2021. As the Maranello team’s sponsorship scheme has changed there is also some question marks regarding the livery choices which Scuderia Ferrari will make going forward and could even see them run a different colour scheme during testing than we’ll see when the cars run in anger at the first Grand Prix of the 2022 Formula One campaign, in Bahrain.
