After the double retirement in Brazil, Ferrari arrives in Las Vegas looking for redemption. The question now is whether the Maranello team will be able to return to the fight for second place in the 2025 Formula 1 constructors’ championship.
During the Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend, many crucial points are at stake, both for the constructors’ standings — where Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari are battling for second position — and for the overall world championship picture. Following the Brazilian Grand Prix, the Maranello team slipped to fourth place in the constructors’ table and is now searching for a strong response. According to former F1 driver Jenson Button, Ferrari may still be in contention to climb back up the order, but everything could depend on one key factor.
The constructors’ championship
Jenson Button, who has recently stepped away from racing completely, appeared on the latest episode of Sky Sports F1. Responding to questions from fans alongside David Croft, Button discussed the intense fight for second place between Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari. Despite the significant increase in the points gap between the Brackley team and Ferrari after the last race weekend, Jenson Button admitted: “A big swing in points from P2 to P4 in the constructors. It hurts, but the road is still long and they are still close enough that, if they get a couple of good results, they can finish second in the constructors’ standings.”
For Jenson Button, however, third place might be a more straightforward target: “They’re racing against one of their main rivals, which basically has only one driver scoring points. So it might be easier to beat Red Bull. Mercedes is a little different because both of their drivers are in great form.”
The former F1 champion added: “It’s fantastic to see Kimi Antonelli fighting for a great podium, a great P2 even in the Sprint. They’ve scored a lot of points and both drivers are in the mix to score.”
The key factor
Jenson Button considers Ferrari’s drivers to be two of the best in the world, and fully capable of closing the gap in the standings — but he stressed that success will depend on several conditions: “Two of the best drivers in the world and if they have a weekend without complications, I think they will score good points.”
However, the Maranello team is coming off a few turbulent days following the recent comments from president John Elkann. Button highlighted this particular aspect, suggesting that it could play a decisive role not only this weekend but also in the final part of the season: “As long as the atmosphere is good, because that definitely makes the difference.”
