Hamilton satisfied after the first day of 2026 F1 testing in Barcelona with the Ferrari SF-26: “An intense day due to the weather, but productive”
The opening day of the 2026 Formula 1 test session in Barcelona took place in far from ideal conditions, but for Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari the overall assessment remained positive. The British driver completed a total of 57 laps during the day, running exclusively on full wet and intermediate tyres due to the persistent rain that affected the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Overall, the Ferrari SF-26 covered 121 laps, equivalent to around 560 kilometres.
The work programme was inevitably influenced by the weather, yet it still proved valuable at such a delicate stage of preparation, with the new generation of cars making their debut under a deeply revised technical regulation framework. On this first outing, the focus was not on outright performance, but rather on gathering data and confirming the correct operation of the car’s main systems.
A solid base for the Ferrari SF-26 despite the rain
At the end of the day, Lewis Hamilton underlined the importance of the work completed, pointing out that even difficult conditions can provide useful indications during the early stages of a car’s development.
“It was an intense first day but a productive one, especially because of the changing weather conditions. We managed to complete a good number of kilometres with the car and collect a lot of useful data, which is particularly important with such a significant regulatory change,” explained the seven-time world champion.
The fact that Ferrari were able to run consistently, without major interruptions, is an encouraging sign at a stage when reliability is one of the key aspects to monitor.
Reliability and learning at the heart of the programme
Hamilton also highlighted the absence of technical issues, a crucial element for approaching the work of the coming days with confidence. “There were no significant problems and that gives us a solid base on which to continue learning and building over the next few days,” added the British driver.
In a session that did not allow the team to explore the car’s ultimate performance potential, the focus remained on understanding the new mechanical and aerodynamic characteristics, as well as managing wet-weather tyres, an aspect that is far from secondary with cars that are so different from those of the past.
Barcelona testing as the first step towards 2026
Lewis Hamilton’s day fits perfectly within the spirit of the private Barcelona test, designed to allow teams to accumulate mileage and validate technical solutions ahead of the official pre-season test in Bahrain. Completing 57 laps in such challenging conditions, the work carried out by the British driver represents an important first step on the road towards the new Formula 1 season.
The coming days should offer different scenarios, hopefully with more stable weather conditions, but the initial feedback suggests an orderly start without major setbacks, something that is far from guaranteed at the beginning of a new regulatory era.
The quiet confidence coming from the Ferrari garage is a promising sign for the Tifosi. Lewis Hamilton’s successful navigation of the rain-slicked Spanish asphalt shows that the SF-26 is a resilient platform right out of the box. With the first 121 laps in the bag, the team now shifts its focus to optimizing the active aerodynamics and power unit delivery as they prepare for the dry-weather running that will truly define the pecking order.
