Matteo Togninalli reflects on Ferrari’s productive opening day of 2026 F1 testing in Barcelona. Ferrari emphasizes reliability and learning during the first day of 2026 F1 testing.

Togninalli analyzes Ferrari’s first 2026 F1 test in Barcelona: “Focus on reliability and understanding the car”

The opening day of Ferrari’s 2026 Formula 1 pre-season testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was heavily affected by persistent rain, which inevitably limited on-track running. Despite the challenging conditions, Ferrari’s assessment of the day was positive, particularly in relation to the objectives set for this early stage of preparation.

Track engineer Matteo Togninalli offered his analysis of the session, highlighting that the test programme proceeded smoothly without any major disruptions. This is no small feat, given the extensive technical changes that come with the new regulations.

Why Barcelona rain is actually a positive sign for Ferrari

According to Matteo Togninalli, the first day allowed the team to gather valuable insights, even if no outright performance benchmarks were targeted. He explained that, considering the wet conditions, the session was productive. Despite the rain, Ferrari managed to cover a good number of kilometres and, crucially, did not encounter significant reliability issues. For a brand-new car and power unit, reliability remains the top priority, especially during the initial outings.

The mileage accumulated, even in wet conditions, represents a fundamental first step for validating the SF-26’s systems and starting to build a solid foundation for the coming test sessions.

Understanding the car remains the primary focus

Matteo Togninalli emphasized that it is still far too early to draw conclusions about the car’s ultimate performance. The current goal is solely to understand the vehicle, learn its behaviour, and build driver and team confidence incrementally over the next few days. He underlined that the focus is on Ferrari themselves rather than direct comparisons with rivals.

“It is still too early to talk about performance: for now, the attention is on getting to know the car, understanding its behaviour, and gaining confidence step by step over the next few days, concentrating fundamentally on ourselves,” he said.

A careful and methodical approach at Barcelona

Ferrari’s approach reflects the philosophy of the Barcelona tests, which are designed more as a functional check than a direct competition benchmark. Matteo Togninalli’s comments confirm that Ferrari is starting this new technical era with a gradual, cautious approach, prioritizing reliability and a comprehensive understanding of the SF-26 project.

The coming days of testing will expand this picture further, but the debut of the SF-26 in the wet at Montmeló has already provided encouraging feedback on the work carried out by Ferrari in Maranello over the winter months.

The calm and calculated tone from the Ferrari pit wall suggests a team that feels in control of its development curve. By prioritizing the “health” of the SF-26 over flashy lap times, Matteo Togninalli and his team are ensuring that when the field finally reaches the dry heat of Sakhir, the Scuderia will have a deep database of system checks to lean on. The 2026 project has left the garage with its best foot forward, proving that the winter calculations in Maranello are translating accurately to the physical world.
