F1: Leclerc’s future remains uncertain as Todt urges caution after Bahrain tests
Ferrari’s 2026 project was widely described as decisive not only for the team’s competitive ambitions, but also for the long-term future of Charles Leclerc in red. For that reason, the words of his manager, Nicholas Todt, carry particular weight at this stage of the season.
Speaking to Canal+ during Formula 1 testing in Bahrain, Nicholas Todt did not address the driver market directly. However, he did analyze Ferrari’s current situation and the early performance of the new SF-26 on track. The French manager showed measured optimism — no overexcitement, but no alarm bells either. “Testing is going quite well. It’s very difficult to get a clear picture because we don’t know how the others are performing. We’re doing a lot of laps, so that’s quite encouraging.”
Nicholas Todt discusses Leclerc’s future with Ferrari
One of the key aspects highlighted was mileage. In a season marked by major regulatory changes, completing as many laps as possible is crucial to understanding a brand-new car. Nicholas Todt also commented on Leclerc’s mindset heading into the new campaign. “Charles has a positive attitude, he’s happy to be back behind the wheel and he can’t wait to be in Melbourne, even though we don’t know where we stand compared to the others.”
According to Nicholas Todt, the atmosphere inside Ferrari is also encouraging. “People are optimistic, positive, they’re working well together.” However, he warned against jumping to conclusions too soon. “It’s true that I have the impression that this year Ferrari has tried many things and attempted to innovate. But that doesn’t mean anything.” The message is clear.
An innovative car does not automatically translate into winning performance. “We can see that Aston Martin is struggling despite the car looking revolutionary,” he added, pointing out how appearances in Formula 1 can be misleading.
He concluded with a note of confidence, but without bold predictions. “In any case, we are confident and happy to be here.”
Nicholas Todt’s comments accurately reflect Ferrari’s current position. The team is working intensely on development. Charles Leclerc appears motivated and focused. Yet no one is making firm commitments about the competitive hierarchy or about what lies ahead.
The first real answers will come in Melbourne, when the new era truly begins under race conditions. Only then will it become clear whether the 2026 season will be tightly contested or whether one team will pull ahead early. And with that, the discussion about Charles Leclerc’s long-term future at Ferrari will inevitably start to take clearer shape.
Therefore, while Nicolas Todt has expressed encouragement regarding Ferrari’s high mileage and innovative approach in Bahrain, he remains realistic about the 2026 competitive hierarchy, suggesting that Charles Leclerc’s future with the Scuderia will depend heavily on the car’s actual performance once the racing begins in Australia.
