Scuderia Ferrari continues to bring updates to the SF-25 car while simultaneously working on the development of its 2026 Formula 1 challenger. However, questions arise about the specific roles that seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton and long-time Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc will play in shaping the team’s future. Team advisor and deputy team principal Jerome D’Ambrosio offered some insight during the most recent Grand Prix weekend.
This past week, the Italian team carried out a private filming day at the Mugello circuit, where it tested a revised rear suspension layout that is expected to make its official race debut at the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. Alongside these technical developments, Jerome D’Ambrosio explained how Ferrari manages its car upgrade process and clarified when and how the drivers are brought into the loop—particularly Hamilton, who joined Ferrari this season, and Charles Leclerc, now one of the team’s pillars.
According to Jerome D’Ambrosio, developing a modern Formula 1 car like the SF-25 involves two key stages. The first stage focuses primarily on the overall performance of the car—refining its core design and aerodynamic efficiency. The second phase is centered on tailoring the car to the specific driving styles and preferences of its drivers.
Two distinct phases in F1 car development
Jerome D’Ambrosio emphasized that input from both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton is crucial, but it only comes into play effectively once a strong technical foundation is established. Speaking to the media, the Ferrari deputy team boss explained:
“Of course, we listen to the drivers’ input. During our factory meetings, both Lewis and Charles are aligned in terms of what they conceptually need from the car. These discussions are ongoing, and part of the development process is about bringing a package that maximizes aerodynamic load and overall performance. But at the same time, there are many elements we work on to ensure the drivers have the right tools and that the car can be adapted as much as possible to their driving styles.”
Lewis Hamilton, who has repeatedly stated his long-term vision with Ferrari, has made it clear that he is particularly focused on helping develop the 2026 car. That season will mark the beginning of a new regulatory cycle, featuring significant changes to chassis design and power unit architecture. The British driver has underlined that he already knows exactly what he wants from Ferrari’s next-generation machine.
However, both he and Charles Leclerc remain actively involved in the evolution of the current SF-25 as well, contributing valuable feedback on updates and performance issues race by race.
Jerome D’Ambrosio concluded:
“There are two distinct phases, and I wouldn’t say they’re entirely separate, but there’s a broader picture where performance gains are the focus. Then there’s the second phase, where we fine-tune things based on what the driver needs. And in that stage, listening carefully to the drivers becomes absolutely essential.”
With the SF-25 continuing to evolve and Ferrari already eyeing the strategic transition toward 2026, the collaboration between Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton is proving central to shaping both short-term competitiveness and long-term ambitions for the Maranello-based team.
