What happened during the Chinese GP, with the double disqualification of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc’s Ferraris, marks one of the darkest moments in the recent history of the Scuderia. The severity of the penalty is further compounded by the team’s difficult start to the 2025 Formula 1 season.
After a preseason filled with celebrations and enthusiasm, the first two races have exposed numerous issues with the SF-25. Heading into the Suzuka weekend, Ferrari sits in fifth place in the standings, 61 points behind McLaren—a situation few would have predicted after Abu Dhabi in December, where Ferrari fought for the constructors’ title until the final lap.
There is still time to recover, but another poor performance in Japan could already feel like a definitive failure.
Criticism continues
Meanwhile, criticism of Fred Vasseur’s team keeps pouring in. In a lengthy interview with Blick, Bernie Ecclestone shared an intriguing behind-the-scenes story related to Ferrari’s double disqualification in China. “In London, I met Luca Cordero di Montezemolo. He was speechless after the double disqualification in Shanghai. Italy has never experienced such a disgraceful start to a season,” said the former F1 boss.
“There was clearly a lack of proper oversight from the team. For decades, drivers have been picking up gravel and rubber debris to increase the car’s weight at the end of a race,” Bernie Ecclestone added.
