Formula 1 would like to introduce a new visible graphic during Grand Prix races: the heartbeat. However, implementation is not so simple. During the Austrian Grand Prix, Formula 1 started to introduce heart rate analysis of two drivers, mainly in the lower categories such as F2. The data is displayed through a new on-screen graphic, indicating the intensity level of the heartbeat.
However, beyond the technical complications, Formula 1 has stated that there may be issues with drivers who do not want their data to be shown and made public. Aside from being a personal matter, drivers may also think that their rivals could gain an advantage if it is shown that their heart rate is high.
Justin Laurie, Formula 1’s technical producer, told Autosport that there are some issues that need to be resolved before conducting a test. “Obviously, there is an element you have to be careful about from an editorial perspective, like how you present that data,” he said. “Every driver is physically different, so we have to take all of that into account when making decisions on how we use this data in the future. But fundamentally, it’s a new area for us, and it’s an exciting area. That’s the main thing.” – the Formula 1 technical producer pointed out.
