Charles Leclerc has dismissed the new regulations set to debut in the 2026 Formula 1 season, sharing his first impressions after simulator sessions.
Formula 1 is preparing for another major regulation change. After the 2022 revolution with the introduction of ground effect cars, everything will change again next year—both the cars and, most importantly, the engines. Following his first simulator sessions in Maranello, Charles Leclerc shared his early thoughts on the 2026 project.
This 75th F1 season was already expected to be split into two phases. The first, which we’ve seen so far, sees all teams focused on maximizing their current packages and aiming for top positions.
The second phase, likely starting mid-summer, will involve all teams halting development of the 2025 cars to fully focus on the 2026 ones. No one wants to be caught unprepared for what will mark the beginning of a new F1 era. It’s well understood that those who begin work early on the new project will gain a significant advantage—Ferrari in 2022 being a recent example.
However, there are growing concerns around the new regulations, particularly regarding car weight, aerodynamics, and engine management. While the cars will be lighter, it’s feared they may not match current performance levels due to reduced downforce and aerodynamic resistance. On circuits like Monza, which already feature low downforce setups, safety concerns for drivers have also emerged.
Charles Leclerc addressed this issue during the Austrian Grand Prix:
“My first impression of the 2026 car? It’s not the most fun car I’ve ever driven so far,” he told reporters including ScuderiaFans.com – “That said, we’re still at an early stage of the project. My hope is that over the coming months things will evolve significantly. Unfortunately, it’s nothing new that new regulations often lead to a car that’s less enjoyable for us to drive.”
“So yes, for now I’m not a big fan of these regulations… But that’s how it is. Looking on the bright side, I do like the challenge of getting the most out of a car that’s very different from what we have now. But do I enjoy driving it? I’d say no.” – he concluded ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix weekend.
