The new concept of the 2022 Formula 1 cars was presented with the aim of making air flows more stable and facilitate overtaking But what Formula 1 will we see in 2022? On Thursday 15 July, the FIA and Liberty Media presented a model car to show the public what the next regulation should look like. A group of developers has already been at work for several years and the fruit of this revolution has been postponed to next year due to Covid-19.
From the nose to the wings, from the floor to the underground to the 18-inch tires, but what is the concept behind these changes? What are the rules that should increase the audience, which should increase the show, reach young people and families? How to bring in new investors and new engineers?
The purpose of the modification, simplifying a lot, is to make the air flows that pass through the running machine more stable and to decrease the turbulence generated by the machine which at high speed makes the flow encountered by the machine running behind it at a distance close up a lot more “dirty”.
In absolute terms, greater uniformity for everyone and, in fact, it is expected that the new machines will be slower by about three seconds, also due to the increase in the weight of the cars for safety reasons. The engineers will have to change philosophy because until now the research on aerodynamic load was favored by various systems and expedients that on the one hand improve the performance of the car but, on the other hand, determine a disadvantage for the following car that has to deal with unstable and unpredictable flows, the so-called dirty air.
Other aspects for the Formula 1 of the future are those of sustainability with the gradual use of biofuels and the search for less expensive design processes.
Will the Formula 1 teams be able to interpret the new rules in the best possible way without distorting this sport, the pinnacle of technology and men’s courage for decades?
All the fans hope so, Formula 1 has got us used to this! They chose the Silverstone circuit, the most historic together with Monza, to show us a glmpse of the Formula One of tomorrow. May the packed grandstands of the British Grand Prix be a good sign.
