British former racing driver Damon Hill was not surprised by the performance of Scuderia Ferrari in the last round of the 2021 Formula 1 season, the British Grand Prix. However Damon Hill is curious to see if that strong form will continue in Hungary.
One of the surprises of the Silverstone event was definitely Ferrari’s strong pace, as Charles Leclerc narrowly missed out on the win. However Damon Hill says he realized that the Maranello team would be competitive after their performance in the first free practice session: “I saw Charles arrive after the first session which I commented on for Sky on the Friday morning before qualifying,” Damon Hill told the F1 Nation podcast – “I said: ‘We can only say that Ferrari is doing quite well,’ and luckily they actually kept it over the weekend. They looked good and fit to face the competition against McLaren. I think the warm temperatures helped them. Speaking with them in the paddock they certainly felt that the warmer conditions seemed to suit the way they used their tires. But Charles Leclerc also used his genius to add that little special edge they needed. All in all, a good performance from Ferrari, but there are still some ups and downs. We don’t know what will happen in Hungary.” – he explained.
Natalie Pinkham added that Charles Leclerc is eager to see how Ferrari will perform at the Hungaroring, as another strong performance would mean they have finally found the right path in terms of tire wear:
“He [Charles Leclerc] feels that if they have a good performance in Hungary, then they will feel like they are turning a corner,” said Natalie Pinkham. “They are still worried and confused by Paul Ricard. They said: ‘We don’t have the answers from Paul Ricard yet, we still don’t understand why we were so bad there.’ If you consider that it is a track similar to Silverstone where they almost took the victory… “
