Enrico Cardile explains reason behind Ferrari’s sudden drop or improvement in performance

A ‘trap’ that has also affected Red Bull
Behind Red Bull, the power dynamics among Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, and Aston Martin have repeatedly shifted during the season, a reshuffling that went beyond the updates introduced or the characteristics of the circuit the Circus was engaged in.

To be fair, Red Bull has also experienced some ‘remarkable’ setbacks in the two-year period as the dominant force. Singapore 2023 was the most glaring example (Adrian Newey even used the term ‘blunder’), but also in Austria in 2022, Max Verstappen’s RB18 chewed through the tires compared to Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari.

This is because every small modification made in the pursuit of greater performance can have enormous repercussions on the car’s balance. The ‘resonance’ of a change in adjustments is significantly amplified compared to the previous generation of ground-effect cars due to the new ‘physical’ functioning of the single-seaters.

Enrico Cardile, Ferrari’s Technical Director, explained these variables that come into play in terms of design and development when continually seeking higher performance. “There are three peculiarities that characterize this generation of cars – Enrico Cardile’s comments in an interview with the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport – the first is porpoising, which did not occur before. The aerodynamic bounce limits the design because you have to prevent the car from starting to oscillate on straights or in corners. Secondly, the rules are much more restrictive than in the past. The freedom to develop the car and respond to issues has decreased. Thirdly, the underfloor reacts much more sensitively to the smallest changes. Even if you change a small thing in one place, it will have repercussions on a large area of the underfloor at another point. This is because the underfloor is no longer flat but three-dimensional. Once the car is optimized for a particular solution, deviating from that configuration can cause many problems. But since you are constantly looking for lap time, you have to keep searching for new solutions.” – the Ferrari Technical Director concluded.

Another explanation for the inconsistency in development performance is that Enrico Cardile doesn’t know what he is doing. He is throwing anything and everything at the wall and seeing what sticks.
Meanwhile over at Red Bull their development upgrades yield consistent performance improvement. The Adrian Newey led team know what they are doing.
The only explanation is Cardile isn’t good enough to to lead the Ferrari aero and chassis team. Cardile thinks suspension set ups are overrated in these ground effects cars. Newey and Allison know suspension is critical in GE cars.
So how to explain this conflict? Consider this:
In 2016 mid summer Sergio Marchionne was looking for aero engineers after James Allison left Ferrari due to the tragic loss of his wife.
Sergio was desperate to overhaul the Scuderia technical team. He plucks Cardile from the GT division and sends him to the F1 team. Cardile has no F1 experience.
In 2019 Mattia Binotto ousts Arrivabene and seizes control of the Scuderia. Binotto makes Cardile head of chassis and aero performance. A man with less than 3 years F1 experience gets to lead one of the most complex technical departments in F1 for the most pressure filled team. Does that make sense? So what happened? In 2019 we got a car that was not able to generate enough downforce. It had a weak front end and loose rear end. It needed the softest C5 tire to have any chance or a low downforce track. It was flawed. So what did Cardile do? He kept the same basic concept for 2020 but now had less power after the TD engine directive. The car had the same downforce flaws and now had too much drag for the power available.
In January 2020 Covid hit hard and the cars were frozen until 2022 except for some minor token upgrades in 2021.
In 2022 we got a car that was only fast at ultra low ride height but at the expense of porpoising and bouncing. After TD39 it was crippled. 2023 was uncompetitive except for Singapore when Red Bull got their set up wrong. But in all those years all the way back to 2019 all Scuderia cars have suffered from excessive tire degradation. Not enough consistent downforce and unbalanced downforce.
For this you can than Enrico Cardile.
It’s time for Ferrari to wake up and move out Cardile. Send him back to the GT team.

Vasseur is making the same mistake as Binotto. He is placing his trust in the wrong guy. If Vasseur fails to realize this soon enough he will face the same fate as Binotto. Vasseur has limited time to show progress.
