The Formula 1 super genius, the creator of cars that have made history in this sport, most recently the RB19, still leaves a small opening for a possible move to Maranello in the future. The Brit, winner of an impressive 12 Constructors’ Championships in his career, is clearly devoted to the Red Bull cause, the team that allowed him to establish himself as the most successful designer of all time. Nevertheless, the allure of the prancing horse remains strong.
Adrian Newey at Ferrari: (currently) an impossible partnership
“The Ferrari is a magical brand that, honestly, probably fascinates all motorsport enthusiasts who are tempted to be part of it if there is an opportunity,” said Adrian Newey on the Formula for Success podcast. “I have been approached, and I have come close to doing it three times. One of these times in IndyCar, a long time ago.” – the chief technical officer of the Red Bull Racing F1 team admitted.
Despite the relentless courtship by the prancing horse, the Englishman has always preferred to decline the offers to avoid enduring the daily pressure that a legendary team like Ferrari generates for those who work there: “It’s an extraordinary brand. It has had a great history. It is, in fact, the Italian national team, with all the pros and cons that come with it.
“And the cons are that if you don’t do an excellent job, you are absolutely reproached and torn to pieces. Of course, if you do a good job, you are a national hero. So this carries all its pressures. But as far as I’m concerned, I have to try to eliminate the passion, that side, and tackle the issue from an engineering point of view. The teams I have worked for, I have liked them a lot.” – the British engineer pointed out.
David Coulthard, who more than anyone else managed to convince Adrian Newey to join the Red Bull project back in 2005, was also speaking alongside Newey: “Red Bull, in part thanks to your advice, David, is the team I have been with more or less from the beginning. It is a team in which I have been centrally involved in the development of the engineering side of the team, so it is a team with which I feel comfortable. We all know how we work. To change now, I’m not saying I would never change, one should never say never, but it would be like abandoning one’s family. Because that’s what it has become.” – he concluded.
