Oscar Piastri delivered a stunning performance at Zandvoort to claim pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix, securing it with a record-breaking lap around the tight and twisting circuit.
Throughout the weekend, it had seemed that Lando Norris was the man to beat. The British driver topped all three free practice sessions, marking the first time this season he had been fastest across the board heading into qualifying. However, when it mattered most, it was his McLaren team-mate who rose to the occasion.
The duel between the pair began early. Piastri edged ahead in Q1 by just 0.131 seconds, showing that he had the pace to challenge. Norris responded immediately in Q2, producing a blistering effort of 1:08.874 — a new benchmark at that point, eclipsing Max Verstappen’s 2021 lap record by a mere 0.011 seconds.
That set the stage for a thrilling final shootout in Q3. On their opening attempts, Piastri found a fraction more speed, setting a time of 1:08.662 to once again lower the lap record. The margin was razor-thin, only 0.012 seconds separating the two McLarens. In a surprising twist, neither driver managed to improve on their second and final attempts, leaving the Australian’s lap untouched at the top of the timesheets.
The result handed Oscar Piastri his first pole position in seven races and cemented his growing reputation as one of the sharpest qualifiers on the grid, while also underlining McLaren’s formidable one-lap pace at Zandvoort.
