Dutch GP 2025 qualifying results – McLaren sets the pace, Ferrari SF-25 cars shows signs of recovery
Qualifying for the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix has come to a close. The Zandvoort circuit, hosting the fifteenth round of the Formula 1 World Championship, once again provided plenty of drama and excitement. Here is a detailed look at how the session unfolded and what it means heading into Sunday’s race.
McLaren continues its dominant form
After three free practice sessions where McLaren consistently emerged as the dominant force, Saturday’s qualifying session delivered confirmation. The question was whether the MCL39 cars of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris would be able to maintain their superiority. At the same time, fans were eager to see if Ferrari could challenge, if Red Bull had solved the problems that appeared on Friday, and if Mercedes could step up as the second-fastest team as Toto Wolff had suggested before the weekend.
Weather and track conditions
Contrary to forecasts predicting heavy rain, the entire session was run in dry conditions with clear skies. However, temperatures remained relatively cool. At Zandvoort, the asphalt registered 34°C, while the air temperature was 20°C, with humidity at 65% and a southerly wind blowing at 4 m/s. For this round, Pirelli supplied the C2 (hard), C3 (medium), and C4 (soft) tyre compounds.
Piastri on pole, McLaren locks out the front row
At the end of the session, it was Oscar Piastri who secured pole position with a record lap of 1:08.662. Right behind him was his team-mate Lando Norris, completing a front-row lockout for McLaren. Max Verstappen, the home favorite, had to settle for third place. George Russell took fourth, ahead of the two Ferrari drivers.
Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton show progress
Lewis Hamilton earned praise for his performance, as he showed clear signs of recovery after the disappointment in Hungary. Although still behind team-mate Charles Leclerc, Hamilton’s seventh-place result was a step forward. His Maranello teammate finished sixth, putting both Ferrari cars solidly in the top ten.
Carlos Sainz also impressed in the Williams, and Liam Lawson managed another strong performance. But the standout of the day was rookie Isack Hadjar, who achieved a remarkable fourth place on the grid, underlining his rapid progress in Formula 1.
Drivers who struggled in qualifying
On the other side of the spectrum, Lance Stroll’s struggles continued. After his mistake in turn 4 during Friday practice, the Canadian made another costly error, failing to progress past Q1. His form remains a serious concern for Aston Martin. Yuki Tsunoda also endured another disappointing session, once again failing to reach Q3. Andrea Kimi Antonelli qualified eleventh, showing slight improvement, but he still remains far from the pace of his team-mate George Russell.
