Could Ferrari seriously consider signing Max Verstappen in the future as a successor to Lewis Hamilton? According to emerging speculation, there may already be movement behind the scenes regarding a potential sensational switch to Maranello.
The Scuderia Ferrari is reportedly keeping a close eye on Max Verstappen’s situation, with the idea of a future arrival at Maranello that could ultimately replace Lewis Hamilton and potentially form a dream driver line-up alongside Charles Leclerc.
The Prancing Horse is said to be balancing its long-term vision while maintaining full focus on the present. At the moment, the driver pairing of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton is considered one of the strongest on the Formula 1 grid, but the long-term picture remains open.
It is well known that Lewis Hamilton, despite his extraordinary career and seven World Championships, is approaching the final phase of his Formula 1 journey, with age naturally limiting the number of remaining competitive seasons at the very top level.
In this context, some insiders suggest that a long-term candidate for a future Ferrari seat could be young talent Oliver Bearman, who is widely regarded as one of the most promising British drivers of his generation.
At the same time, with Giampiero Lambiase expected to move to McLaren in 2028 according to rumours, new scenarios are opening up around Max Verstappen’s future and his long-term position within Red Bull.
Reported interest from Ferrari and growing uncertainty around Max Verstappen
“I could imagine that Max might start looking around if Red Bull cannot find a solution to its current issues. At some point, there could be the classic straw that breaks the camel’s back: it will be interesting in the coming weeks and months to see what he decides. Behind the scenes, a lot is happening and even more will happen around Verstappen in the coming months. Zak Brown from McLaren is very fascinated by Max and there is mutual respect between them. With Lambiase on board they will have an extra ace up their sleeve. But not only that: both Mercedes and Ferrari will definitely keep an eye on Verstappen’s situation.”
These were the words of Erik van Haren, a well-known journalist from De Telegraaf and a source historically close to the Dutch driver Max Verstappen, adding further fuel to ongoing speculation in the Formula 1 paddock.
At present, Ferrari appears to have a more stable organisational structure compared to Red Bull, whose technical project has not shown the expected level of progress in recent seasons. In addition, several key figures have left the Anglo-Austrian team over the past few years, raising questions about long-term stability.
According to this narrative, a potential departure of Max Verstappen would represent a major blow for the Milton Keynes-based team, potentially marking a turning point in the current Formula 1 competitive cycle.
Should such a scenario ever materialise, Ferrari would be under pressure not to allow a driver of Max Verstappen’s calibre, a four-time World Champion, to move elsewhere without making a strong attempt to secure his services.
For now, everything remains speculative, but the idea of a Ferrari line-up featuring Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen continues to capture attention as one of the most exciting hypothetical pairings in modern Formula 1.
