The practice of outright bluntness is not all that common in Formula 1; truth be told, it never really has been. It is a rare trait in high-level professional sports in general, and it is not always a matter of hypocrisy. More often than not, it is simply a necessary shield that champions adopt to protect themselves from outside pressure.
That is why Charles Leclerc deserves a round of applause. Given the direct comparison with Lewis Hamilton right now, the Monégasque is certainly not the first Ferrari driver fans are cheering for this week. Yet, precisely because of this context, his latest comments stand out. He declared that he is genuinely happy—and we believe him—for his teammate’s success in the Spanish Grand Prix and for the clear progress the Scuderia has made with its latest upgrades. At the same time, he admitted to being visibly downcast about his own results, or rather, his lack thereof. Frankly, this level of transparency makes him seem far more sincere than almost any of his peers, regardless of the sporting discipline.
We hope this clarity can serve as his launchpad to rebuild. First and foremost, it should help him become the best possible ally to Lewis Hamilton by unlocking his absolute most competitive form from this moment onward. Secondly, it will allow him to recover the baseline performance that is naturally hardwired into his DNA. Achieving both would be a massive win for the Tifosi and for Charles Leclerc himself—you can decide in which order.
While watching a teammate win from the sidelines is never easy, Charles Leclerc’s ability to balance genuine team spirit with raw, vulnerable self-assessment highlights the mental fortitude that will undoubtedly guide him back to the front of the grid.
