Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton could be heading for an increasingly intense battle inside Ferrari as both drivers fight for second place in the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship. Riccardo Ceccarelli, the mental coach behind Formula Medicine, believes the Monegasque is gaining momentum and has not ruled out another victory for the Scuderia before the end of the season. However, he also expects the two Ferrari drivers to fight hard for supremacy within the team, with neither likely to give way to the other.
With Andrea Kimi Antonelli on the verge of securing his maiden world championship, attention is turning towards the increasingly competitive fight for the runner-up position. George Russell currently occupies second place with 242 points, just one ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Max Verstappen is six points behind the Mercedes driver, while Charles Leclerc has closed to within nine points.
Four drivers therefore remain closely matched in the battle to finish immediately behind the championship leader. For Ferrari, the contest carries additional significance because the result could also influence the internal balance between Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
Riccardo Ceccarelli expects fierce Charles Leclerc vs Lewis Hamilton Ferrari battle
Asked whether the presence of both Ferrari drivers in the fight for second place could create tensions between them, Riccardo Ceccarelli suggested that the stakes extend beyond their final positions in the Drivers’ Championship.
“Absolutely. It’s not just second place in the championship that’s at stake, but also supremacy within the team. Finishing the season three or four points ahead of your teammate might mean relatively little historically, but it can carry weight from a psychological point of view and in the team’s internal dynamics.”
The Formula Medicine specialist believes that the rivalry between teammates has a particular significance, even when both drivers are competing for a position below the world champion.
“Your first rival is always your teammate, and beating him always matters. We should expect some good battles, even tough ones, but because they are two mature, responsible and fair drivers, I wouldn’t expect them to deliberately cause accidents. Equally, I wouldn’t expect either of them to lift off for the other.”
His assessment points towards a competitive conclusion to the season for Ferrari. Although Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton share the objective of securing strong results for the Maranello team, both have individual reasons to finish ahead of the other.
The rivalry has already been an important feature of Ferrari’s campaign, with the two drivers responding differently to the characteristics and development of the SF-26. Their performances can be compared through the Charles Leclerc vs Lewis Hamilton head-to-head statistics, which track their results across the season.
Charles Leclerc gaining momentum as Riccardo Ceccarelli sees another Ferrari victory as possible
When asked which of the four contenders he considered the favourite to finish second, Riccardo Ceccarelli identified Max Verstappen as his preferred choice. However, his assessment also included encouraging comments about Ferrari’s recent progress and Charles Leclerc’s improving form.
“The one who has the least to lose is Max Verstappen, with a Red Bull that also seems to me to be the car in the best form. And then Charles Leclerc seems to be improving with Ferrari, certainly more consistent than Lewis Hamilton.”
The Italian specialist believes Ferrari remains capable of challenging for victory when the SF-26 performs as intended.
“When everything works properly, the Scuderia becomes formidable, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the red car back on the top step of the podium. But if I had to bet a cent on one driver for second place, I’d put it on Max Verstappen.”
Those comments reflect the positive impression Ferrari has made during the latter part of the championship. Charles Leclerc’s recent form has strengthened his position in the fight for second, while the Maranello team’s competitiveness has raised hopes that another victory could still be possible.
The Monegasque’s second-place finish at the United States Grand Prix was one of the team’s most encouraging recent results, reinforcing Charles Leclerc’s belief that Ferrari can win again in 2026.
Nevertheless, Riccardo Ceccarelli’s prediction remains an assessment rather than a guarantee. Max Verstappen is still his preferred candidate for the runner-up position, despite the progress made by Ferrari.
Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc put pressure on George Russell
The fight for second place has become particularly significant because of the small gaps separating the four contenders. George Russell has 242 points, Lewis Hamilton has 241, Max Verstappen has 236 and Charles Leclerc has 233.
With Andrea Kimi Antonelli requiring only two more points to secure the Drivers’ Championship, Riccardo Ceccarelli believes the competition immediately behind the Mercedes youngster offers a very different picture of the season.
“Well, if we exclude Kimi for a moment, you could say that we would be experiencing a very open and closely contested championship.”
However, the Italian mental coach believes the four contenders are approaching the battle with very different motivations.
“Everyone has very different motivations. I see Max Verstappen as the favourite, but of the four he seems to me the least interested in the result. The Dutchman’s objective is more about winning Grands Prix to satisfy his desire for success than finishing as Kimi’s attendant.”
Riccardo Ceccarelli does not expect Max Verstappen to feel particularly affected by the pressure of securing second place. For the Red Bull driver, individual race victories appear to carry greater personal significance than becoming the championship runner-up.
The situation is different for George Russell, whose position could become increasingly uncomfortable if the drivers behind him continue to close the gap.
“He won’t be affected in the slightest by the pressure to finish second. It’s a very different situation for George Russell, who could risk finishing as low as fifth. That would be an enormous blow for a driver who started the season as the title favourite.”
Ferrari’s recent improvement has added to that pressure. Both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are within striking distance of the Mercedes driver, while Max Verstappen remains firmly involved in the same contest.
The narrow championship gaps can also be followed through the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship standings, with the fight for second remaining one of the major sporting questions of the closing races.
Riccardo Ceccarelli warns George Russell must protect his Mercedes position
Riccardo Ceccarelli believes George Russell has considerably more to lose than his immediate rivals. In particular, the psychological consequences of finishing behind his younger Mercedes teammate could become difficult to manage.
“George Russell needs to finish at least second to salvage what he can, especially because he has the same Mercedes as Kimi. And it won’t be easy for him to accept celebrating the title won by his teammate.”
The Formula Medicine specialist suggested that such a disappointment could have consequences beyond the championship classification itself.
“Those are situations that hurt, and it will take time to regain full motivation. They are deep disappointments that can have a major impact on psychological balance. They may seem like small details, but they can make a big difference.”
His concern is that George Russell could struggle to maintain his position within Mercedes if the season ends with a particularly large contrast between the achievements of its two drivers.
“George Russell must not accept the status of a loser, because that would mean the team would no longer regard him as a lead driver, but merely as a good number two. He’s still young to enter that situation, and he’ll have to respond.”
These comments represent Riccardo Ceccarelli’s interpretation of the psychological pressures facing the Mercedes driver, rather than a confirmed assessment of the team’s internal hierarchy.
For Ferrari, the situation creates an opportunity. Both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton can potentially finish ahead of a driver who began the season among the championship favourites, while strengthening their own position within the Scuderia.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli expected to remain unchanged by maiden F1 title
While the battle for second place remains open, Andrea Kimi Antonelli is approaching his first Formula 1 World Championship. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver from Bologna needs only two points to secure the title, having produced an outstanding campaign in his second season at the highest level.
Riccardo Ceccarelli was asked whether becoming world champion at such a young age could change the Italian driver’s personality or his approach to racing.
He explained that the effect of winning a world championship varies considerably from one individual to another, pointing to Nico Rosberg as an example of a driver whose relationship with the sport changed after reaching the highest level.
“In my opinion, it’s a reaction that changes from person to person. We look at someone like Nico Rosberg, who, when he became world champion, seemed to have climbed a mountain using his hands, teeth and feet. He reached the summit almost exhausted, to the point of deciding to retire from racing because he had lost his motivation. He had achieved the ultimate result, but was aware that he would never be able to do it again. And so he stopped.”
However, Riccardo Ceccarelli explained that winning a championship can produce a very different reaction in another driver.
“For someone else, becoming world champion can be the moment when you achieve the result and realise that, if you’ve done it once, you can do it a second time. Self-confidence grows while the hunger for success calms down a little, so there can be a more relaxed approach to the future.”
Asked which response he expected from Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the mental coach was confident that the Mercedes youngster would remain grounded.
“I don’t think anything will change for Kimi. I can see how he’s approaching the end of this season despite his very young age. He isn’t putting a foot wrong and isn’t affected by the pressure in the slightest. He wasn’t a favourite at the start of the championship, and he’s dominated it.”
Riccardo Ceccarelli believes the young Italian will enter the following season with the same personality and competitive mentality that have characterised his breakthrough campaign.
“I think the driver from Bologna next year will be the same as he is today. He’s not the type to let success go to his head. He’ll be an exception and remain who he is. If he’s won, it’s because winning comes naturally to him, so he’ll try to do it again.”
The Formula Medicine specialist also emphasised that Andrea Kimi Antonelli does not appear overwhelmed by the significance of his achievements.
“He doesn’t feel the weight of what he’s doing. He’ll enjoy his first title, which comes with so many records, but for Kimi winning is quite normal. It’s not a surprise, but something that’s part of his story.”
Riccardo Ceccarelli compared the Mercedes driver’s expected reaction to that of Max Verstappen, whose personality and outlook he believes remained largely unchanged after becoming world champion.
“I imagine the Italian will react in a similar way to Max Verstappen. Max hasn’t changed anything about the way he lives, and his way of thinking has remained the same. Kimi will be on the same wavelength.”
Ferrari’s final races could shape the Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton rivalry
With Andrea Kimi Antonelli approaching the title, Ferrari’s remaining objectives include fighting for race victories and securing the strongest possible positions for both drivers in the championship.
Riccardo Ceccarelli’s assessment suggests that the contest between Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton could become increasingly important as the season reaches its conclusion. Finishing ahead of the other may influence confidence and the internal balance at Ferrari, even if the eventual difference amounts to only a handful of points.
At the same time, the Italian specialist does not anticipate deliberately dangerous behaviour from either driver. He expects an intense but fair rivalry between two experienced competitors who understand the consequences of their actions.
The Scuderia’s recent improvement makes the situation even more interesting. Ferrari’s stronger race pace following its Austin upgrades has provided further encouragement, although sustaining that performance will remain essential if the team hopes to challenge for another victory.
For Charles Leclerc, the opportunity is to build on his improving form and reduce the championship gap. For Lewis Hamilton, the objective is to protect his position while continuing his pursuit of George Russell.
Riccardo Ceccarelli ultimately favours Max Verstappen to finish second, but his comments underline how close the fight has become. With Ferrari potentially capable of returning to the top step of the podium and both its drivers pursuing the same championship target, the final races could prove particularly significant for the team’s internal rivalry.
