The 2025 Formula 1 British Grand Prix weekend at Silverstone turned out to be a disaster for Scuderia Ferrari and especially for Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque driver openly apologized after being involved in an unpleasant episode that took place on Saturday during the qualifying session.
Ferrari’s performance across the weekend had shown some early promise, particularly on Friday when the SF-25 demonstrated strong pace in several sectors of the circuit. Hopes were high that the team could convert that speed into a strong qualifying result. However, those expectations quickly faded when it mattered most—during the final moments of Q3. Both Ferrari drivers, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, were setting times that placed them under Oscar Piastri’s benchmark in the second sector and appeared to be on track to challenge for a front-row start.
Unfortunately, everything unraveled in the final corner. A driving error from Leclerc destroyed what had otherwise been a very promising lap, ruining his chances of securing a strong grid position. That mistake proved costly not just in qualifying, but for the entire weekend, considering how critical track position is at Silverstone.
Leclerc’s Outburst and Public Apology
In the immediate aftermath of the disappointing qualifying result, Charles Leclerc vented his frustration over the team radio. His comments were unusually harsh, directed primarily at himself, reflecting the immense pressure he had placed on his own shoulders. The small mistake in the final corner weighed heavily on him, especially since the SF-25 finally seemed competitive enough to fight at the front of the field.
Later on, the Ferrari driver admitted his regret over what he had said. Charles Leclerc explained: “I had a bit of a moment over the radio, and I think from the outside it probably sounded amusing. But from my perspective, the frustration was overwhelming, especially when you’re so passionate and fully committed to delivering a strong result. Sometimes I regret the things I say in those intense moments over the radio, but that’s what happens when you’re under pressure.”
His comments highlighted the emotional toll of high-stakes qualifying sessions, particularly when the car is finally delivering the level of performance that had eluded the team in recent races.
The atmosphere within the Ferrari camp was understandably one of deep regret. The team acknowledged that they had once again failed to fully maximize the potential of their car on Saturday. “Too often, we leave something on the table during qualifying. By the time we get to Sunday, we’re usually able to put a few things together,” Leclerc noted. “But this time, I left points behind, and that’s never a good thing.”
As if the qualifying setback wasn’t enough, things got even worse in the race due to a strategic misjudgment. Ferrari opted to start Leclerc on slick tires despite the track still being wet—a gamble that quickly backfired. The poor tire choice compromised the rest of his race and eliminated any chance of recovery, adding to the overall disappointment of the Silverstone weekend for the Scuderia.
The British Grand Prix marked yet another missed opportunity for Ferrari, whose 2025 campaign continues to be plagued by inconsistency and strategic blunders.
