Charles Leclerc's Ferrari helmet raises world-record price at auction

The recent Monaco Grand Prix saw Charles Leclerc’s helmet achieve a groundbreaking price at auction, setting a new world record.

In a compassionate gesture to aid the Emilia Romagna relief fund, which aimed to assist the victims of the devastating floods resulting in fatalities and the displacement of over 20,000 individuals, along with the cancellation of the Formula One Grand Prix at the Imola Circuit, Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc generously donated his helmet, race suit, gloves, and boots to renowned auction house RM Sotheby’s.

The Bell HP77 helmet held great sentimental value for the Ferrari man, a native of Monaco, as it featured a unique design inspired by his father Herve’s helmet, who was the first in their family to navigate the streets of Monte-Carlo in a racing car. While echoing the striped motif of his father’s helmet, Charles Leclerc’s version was customized in his signature red and white colors, paying homage to his national flag. The helmet’s rear was adorned with the inscription ‘Monaco.’

Furthermore, the helmet bore the signature of the Ferrari driver and came with a certificate of authenticity.

Remarkably, the helmet fetched an astounding €306,000 (AU$491,500) at the auction, breaking the previous record for the highest-priced racing helmet ever sold.

The previous record, four years ago, was held by a helmet worn during the 1990 Formula 1 championship by Ayrton Senna, which sold for €162,000.

Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari F1 race suit raised €61,200 (AU$98,300), while the boots were sold for €20,400 (AU$32,770), and the gloves for €42,000 (AU$67,500), resulting in a grand total of €429,600 (AU$690,000).

Sotheby’s expressed through a statement, “The success of this auction not only highlights Charles Leclerc’s exceptional talent and contribution to motorsport but also showcases the generosity and support from enthusiasts worldwide. The proceeds will have a significant impact on the lives of those affected by the recent flooding in Emilia-Romagna.”
