According to recent rumors, technical director Pierre Wachè is close to renewing his contract with Red Bull until 2028, but Scuderia Ferrari is always ready to use Laurent Mekies as a pawn to secure other technicians from Milton Keynes. The prancing horse had tried to snatch Pierre Wachè and Enrico Balbo from Red Bull in recent weeks. However, the attempt ended without success.
Pierre Wachè heading towards renewal with Red Bull, but Ferrari remains on the sidelines thanks to Laurent Mekies.
The relationship between the Frenchman and the team led by Horner should further strengthen. According to Joe Seward, the two parties have reportedly reached an agreement to renew the technician’s contract until 2028.
By doing so, Wachè would pledge lifelong loyalty to the Milton Keynes cause after joining the team back in 2013. He spent five years in the roles of chief and performance engineer before being appointed as technical director in 2018.
Under his technical guidance, exceptional results have been achieved, contributing to the design of winning cars such as the RB16-B, RB-18, and the current RB-19. For these reasons, Red Bull naturally wants to continue the working relationship with the technician by securing him for another five years.

And what about Ferrari? The Italian team is currently the only one without a chosen and experienced technical director. In recent days, James Key was announced at Alfa Romeo and Rob Marshall at McLaren. These are two heavyweight names that have chosen different projects compared to those of the prancing horse.
However, while the pursuit of Pierre Wachè from Red Bull seems to have been lost, the final word has not been spoken yet regarding other technicians. It has already been revealed that two engineers from Milton Keynes are already working in Maranello. Furthermore, the role of Laurent Mekies continues to be valuable in negotiations with Horner & Co.
The French racing director, who has already been announced as the next team principal at AlphaTauri, was normally present in the Maranello pit wall at the Barcelona circuit last weekend. The question everyone is asking is how long Laurent Mekies will continue to be present on the pit wall. Most likely, Scuderia Ferrari will continue to “use” the Frenchman until they have obtained the desired technicians.
On the other hand, Red Bull naturally resists to avoid weakening themselves for the 2024 Formula 1 season and offering a competitive advantage to their rivals. In any case, the situation should be resolved in the coming weeks, and we will find out who will prevail in this notorious battle of technicians.
