Charles Leclerc signs Aston Martin pre-contract with 2026 exit option if Ferrari fails. Charles Leclerc has reportedly signed a pre-contract with Aston Martin.

Charles Leclerc, Ferrari, 2025

F1 Formula 1 | Ferrari: Leclerc has signed with Aston Martin: the option

According to the latest information gathered exclusively by the Italian website F1-News.eu, Charles Leclerc has signed a pre-contract with Aston Martin. The agreement gives him a strategic option that could be activated after the first three races of the 2026 season if Ferrari’s new car fails to prove competitive. Should that happen, the Monegasque driver would be in line for a three-year deal worth more than 100 million euros in total.

Lawrence Stroll has also set a precise deadline: Charles Leclerc will need to communicate his decision between late May and mid-June 2026, allowing Aston Martin to move on the driver market if he chooses to remain in Maranello. It is a clause that opens completely new scenarios for the Monegasque, a driver emotionally tied to Ferrari but increasingly worried about facing yet another unsuccessful project. For Aston Martin, it could create unexpected developments next year, especially after the arrival of Adrian Newey as team principal.

The pre-contract: clauses, timing and conditions

The structure of the agreement is very clear. Charles Leclerc has secured the possibility to walk away after the first three race weekends of 2026, a critical period in which Ferrari’s new project will reveal at least part of its potential under the upcoming regulations. If the car fails to meet expectations, the door to Aston Martin would open immediately with a major offer: a three-year contract worth just over one hundred million euros, which would make him one of the highest-paid drivers on the grid.

To protect his team, Lawrence Stroll has imposed a strict and non-negotiable deadline set between late May and mid-June. This avoids the risk of Aston Martin being left without options should Charles Leclerc decide not to trigger the clause. It is a delicate balance that allows the Monegasque to gain precious time without depriving Aston Martin of the chance to build an alternative plan.

The heart with Ferrari, the doubt about the future

The reason Charles Leclerc wants to wait is deeply human: leaving Ferrari without having fought for a World Championship would be an incredibly painful decision for him. Within the driver’s entourage, there is open talk of the inner struggle behind this choice and his desire not to abandon the project without having full clarity about its true potential.

The year 2026 represents a crossroads both emotionally and professionally: a new set of regulations, a new car, and the long-awaited opportunity to understand whether Ferrari can finally offer him what he has been chasing since his debut in red. Charles Leclerc hopes Ferrari will rise to the challenge, crosses his fingers, and waits. But if the project disappoints once again, the Monegasque star would be ready to pack his bags — carrying with him the regret of an unrealized dream and the hope of fighting for the World Championship away from Maranello.

Ferrari as seen so far, will achieve nothing in 2026 and as a Ferrari fan I am glad that everything is falling apart inside Scuderia. Perhaps that is what is needed for this team to re-evaluate their team and rebuild from scratch.
Looking forward for this to happen next season!

      Hey Aleks

I agree with you fully mate. For years since his debut for Ferrari Leclerc has been giving his all, but Ferrari failed him due to inconsistency. Constant change of Team Principles, not having U.K base that would attract top engineers, a President that has no racing passion for Ferrari that was put due to family heritage, the current principle that’s delusional. Missed opportunities namely Newey. Bringing in driver that is pass his sell by date Hamilton.

And I agree with you maybe things need to fall apart in order for our beloved Red Team to rebuild.

Totally agree and understand, however it’s should ve notes that not all the regulations have been kind, I believe Luke many others that hamilton still has something left in the table, if you look at his performances he’s been over managed and given a car that cannot perform, and he’s not been listened to even though he has the more championship mindset, on 1 side of the garage you have a driver who’s been at the top 8 times winning 7, and the other, a driver who although gives feedback, doesn’t give or push hard enough to make the changes necessary

0% experience?!? Hasn’t he been with them for at least a minute or two? I forget, did he race for anyone else prior to Scuderia? I might be wrong, but I think he’s “a little” experienced… Not as experienced as Hamilton obviously, and he’s been doing SO WELL with scarlet. ;-p

I totally agree with you Aleks, I’m afraid Ferrari have lost the plot! Charles has been faithful to them but it’s time to move on and leave this team behind him. Otherwise he’ll be wasting his time and flogging a dead HORSE!

I am pleased for Charles. He has been constant within Ferrari. As things stand with the ongoing politics within Ferrari I do not see Ferrari being compitent in building a competitive race winning car. They will continue languishing mid field at best.

He started packing already. I see no way Ferrari being competitv next year. All Ferrari fans love Leclerc but it is too much too ask for him to stay. I just wonder if Mr Elkann learn any lesson with Ferrari being dumped by someone who has been always loyal to Ferrari. Not only that but one of the fastest, if not the fastest driver on the grid.
Not bringing A Newey was a huge mistake. For me it is obvious that the only chance for Ferrari to climb the uphill mountain is to start from scratch and build a UK base headquarters. That is the only thing that is in the hands of Ferrari to turn things around. No top Engineer wants to join Ferrari. We need desperately a technical director and we have not even a sign of him. Mr Colletta going to the F1 team would be disaster, for me personally he should stay on WEC and we should bring someone from the F1 world. This things are so obvious for someone which is outside the team how come Mr Elkann doesn´t understand it. Next year unless any small miracle turns up Hamilton/Leclerc/Vasseur will leave most certainly….

The lack of communication and understanding within Ferrari at the moment is it’s downfall, no relationship between drivers and engineers, no clear plan even if it’s a long term plan, it’s a team by name only as there is so little passion and joy within the marque that was always known as the most passionate. Currently it’s just a job, nobody pushing that bit harder for their comrades, there’s no love there and that’s very sad indeed.

Not sure moving to Aston Martin is a vertical move. They have been finishing behind Ferrari all season. He will still be a frustrated middle of the pack finisher Although $100 million contract would be an upgrade.
