F1 | Newey-Ferrari: Aston Martin’s announcement explains why Adrian never arrived in Maranello
Adrian Newey is officially the new Team Principal of Aston Martin, and this surprising move now sheds light on why the legendary engineer ultimately never signed with Ferrari despite last year’s intense courtship.
The news will take time to fully sink in. Seeing Adrian Newey — a figure who has always preferred staying away from microphones and cameras — stepping into the role of Team Principal at Aston Martin is something few would have imagined. Yet behind the announcement, which arrived on the Wednesday opening the Qatar Grand Prix weekend, lies an important detail connected to his decision to reject Ferrari after months of discussions.
The general belief was that the main obstacle preventing an agreement with Ferrari was Newey’s desire to remain in the United Kingdom rather than relocate to Italy. However, his decision to take on a completely new type of position suggests that something more was at play. After winning everything possible with the Milton Keynes team, the British mastermind likely had his sights set on a role carrying greater prestige as he approached the later stage of his career.
And it is possible that Newey expressed this ambition to Ferrari’s top management during the conversations that took place after the announcement of his departure from Red Bull. But given the internal structure and political balance inside Maranello, such a request would have been nearly impossible to grant. Ferrari had only recently launched its new era under Frédéric Vasseur, and appointing Newey as Team Principal would have meant abruptly freezing a project that, at least in 2024, appeared capable of bringing the Prancing Horse back to the front.
Looking back now, considering the many issues Ferrari faced with the SF-25 throughout the season, a change in leadership might actually have produced positive effects. But as always, “what ifs” and “maybes” do not take you far in Formula 1. Ultimately, only the track will provide the real answers.
