Ferrari topped the second free practice session for the 2026 WEC 6 Hours of Monza as Robert Kubica set the fastest lap of Friday in the #83 Ferrari 499P. The Polish driver recorded a 1:38.143 in FP2, finishing 0.796 seconds ahead of Aston Martin after Alpine had led the rain-affected opening session with Charles Milesi.
Friday at Monza brought particularly changeable conditions for the FIA World Endurance Championship field. Rain affected much of the day’s running, making the teams’ work more difficult and having a particularly significant impact on FP1. However, conditions gradually improved during the afternoon, allowing drivers to switch to slick tyres and produce substantially quicker lap times. The contrasting sessions provided valuable indications ahead of qualifying and Sunday’s six-hour race, the final round of the 2026 WEC season.
WEC Monza FP1 results: Alpine leads Ferrari in wet conditions
Alpine made the most of the difficult morning conditions to finish first in the opening free practice session. Charles Milesi moved the #35 Alpine A424 to the top of the timing screens in the closing minutes, setting a best lap of 1:45.862.
Yifei Ye finished second in the #83 Ferrari 499P, just 0.401 seconds behind the leading Alpine. Harry Tincknell in the #007 Aston Martin Valkyrie and Victor Martins in the #36 Alpine recorded identical lap times in the battle for third.
The session was interrupted by three red flags. The first followed an off-track excursion for Antonio Fuoco at Parabolica in the #50 Ferrari, although the car escaped without significant damage. Robin Frijns in the #20 BMW and James Cottingham subsequently caused further interruptions following incidents around Ascari and Lesmo 2.
As the session progressed, the track gradually dried, enabling drivers to improve their lap times considerably. James Calado completed the top five in the #51 Ferrari, followed by the #17 Genesis and #94 Peugeot. Toyota finished 11th and 14th with its two cars, while BMW occupied 13th and 15th positions.
The picture would change significantly during the afternoon as improving track conditions allowed the teams to fit slick tyres.
WEC Monza LMGT3 FP1: McLaren sets the pace
In the LMGT3 category, Tom Fleming was fastest in the #10 Garage 59 McLaren with a lap of 1:57.575.
Giammarco Levorato secured second place in the #88 Ford Proton Competition entry, 0.330 seconds behind, while the #33 TF Sport Corvette completed the top three.
The Team WRT BMW entries also performed well, with the #69 and #32 cars finishing fourth and sixth respectively.
WEC Monza FP2 results: Robert Kubica puts Ferrari 499P fastest
Ferrari took centre stage in the afternoon as the improved track conditions transformed the second free practice session for the 6 Hours of Monza.
The drying surface allowed the Hypercar field to switch to Michelin slick tyres, producing a more representative final phase of running. Robert Kubica took full advantage, setting a 1:38.143 in the #83 Ferrari 499P to finish at the top of the classification.
The Polish driver completed his fastest lap in the closing stages, finishing 0.796 seconds clear of the #007 Aston Martin. The result came as rival teams continued concentrating primarily on their preparations for the remainder of the weekend. The #15 BMW finished third, more than 1.5 seconds behind Robert Kubica, followed by the #36 Alpine and #19 Genesis.
The #38 Cadillac Jota entry secured sixth place, ahead of the #50 Ferrari in seventh. The #94 Peugeot, #17 Genesis and #35 Alpine completed the top ten. Toyota continued to struggle in terms of its positions on the timing screens. The #8 car finished 12th, while the #7 remained at the bottom of the classification, more than five seconds away from the fastest lap.
For Ferrari, the result provided an encouraging end to Friday at its home circuit. However, with the fastest time recorded during practice rather than qualifying, the competitive order still needs to be established in the sessions ahead.
The changing conditions also underline the importance of the preparations discussed in Ferrari’s WEC Monza season-finale preview, with the Italian manufacturer aiming to finish its campaign strongly on home soil.
WEC Monza LMGT3 FP2: Ford secures a one-two finish
Ford Proton Competition dominated the closing stages of the afternoon LMGT3 session, securing the first two positions.
Sebastian Priaulx took the #77 Mustang to the top of the classification with a 1:50.352, edging teammate Logan Sargeant in the #88 car by just 0.087 seconds. The #61 Iron Lynx Mercedes finished third, ahead of the #91 Manthey Porsche and the two ASP Lexus entries, #87 and #78.
Both AF Corse Ferrari entries and the TF Sport Corvettes finished outside the top ten.
WEC 6 Hours of Monza: Saturday qualifying and Sunday race schedule
With Friday’s running complete, the 2026 WEC season finale moves into its decisive phase on Saturday.
Hypercar and LMGT3 competitors return to the circuit at 10:30 local time for FP3, their final practice opportunity before qualifying and Hyperpole, which begin at 14:20. Sunday will bring the 6 Hours of Monza, with the race set to determine the remaining outcomes of the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship season.
Ferrari’s complete weekend timetable is available in the 2026 WEC Monza practice, qualifying and race schedule.
The Italian manufacturer will also be looking to build on the promising pace displayed by the #83 Ferrari 499P as its endurance programme approaches the conclusion of the season. The wider picture surrounding the campaign and preparations for the future is explored in Antonello Coletta’s assessment of Ferrari’s WEC season and development priorities.
