Charles Leclerc reveals he felt anxious over Ferrari strategy decision at COTA | F1 Austin GP. Charles Leclerc admitted he was initially concerned by Ferrari's decision to start on softs.

Charles Leclerc delivered a standout performance for Ferrari at the 2025 United States Grand Prix, finishing third and securing both his and Ferrari’s first podium since the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. The Monegasque driver’s podium finish came after a daring strategic call, highlighting Ferrari’s ability to extract performance from the SF-25 under challenging conditions.

The race was dominated by Max Verstappen, who claimed a commanding victory, while Lando Norris completed the podium by finishing in second place. Despite Ferrari initially appearing to struggle to maximize the SF-25’s potential, Leclerc and teammate Lewis Hamilton showed resilience throughout the weekend.

Challenging Sprint Qualifying Yet Strong Recovery

Ferrari faced early difficulties in Sprint qualifying, with Charles Leclerc limited to P10 and Lewis Hamilton qualifying in P8. However, both drivers displayed determination in the Sprint race, finishing fourth and fifth after a competitive battle. Hamilton overtook Charles Leclerc in the closing laps of the Sprint, but the two drivers continued to demonstrate strong pace, with the Monegasque ultimately gaining the upper hand in Saturday’s main qualifying session, securing P3 on the grid compared to Lewis Hamilton’s P5.

Race Strategy and Tyre Management Key to Podium

At the start of the Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc launched effectively, overtaking Lando Norris and maintaining his position on the soft tyre compound for the first 21 laps. Although Lando Norris eventually regained the position, strategic pit stops allowed Charles Leclerc to temporarily reclaim P2, before ultimately finishing behind the McLaren in third place. This performance underlines the importance of tyre management and strategic calls in modern Formula 1 racing.

Leclerc Reflects on Soft Tyre Gamble at COTA

After the race, Charles Leclerc revealed that Ferrari’s decision to start on the soft tyres initially caused some concern. He acknowledged that being the only driver on the soft compound represented a significant risk, but praised the team’s strategy as it allowed him to manage tyre performance effectively and gain crucial track positions during the race.

Charles Leclerc noted that the plan focused on utilizing the soft tyres to achieve “free air” and maximize early race advantage. While the strategy did not result in overtaking both cars ahead, it successfully improved his position, proving beneficial by the end of the race. He also emphasized that returning to the podium after a challenging second half of the season, including a difficult FP1 session affected by a gearbox issue, was a satisfying outcome.

Reflecting on his competitive duel with Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc highlighted the enjoyment of racing at the limit, even though he ultimately finished behind the McLaren. This spirited on-track battle demonstrated both his skill and composure under pressure.

Implications for Ferrari and Leclerc’s Future

Ferrari can take significant encouragement from the Monegasque’s performance at the Circuit of the Americas. Both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton displayed impressive pace on the soft tyre, securing vital points in the fight to maintain second place in the Constructors’ Championship. The Maranello team will aim to replicate this form in upcoming races, ensuring that COTA is not a standalone success.

Leclerc’s future with Ferrari beyond the 2026 season remains a topic of discussion within the Formula 1 paddock. The 28-year-old driver could become a central figure in the 2026 F1 driver market if Ferrari fails to present a competitive package capable of supporting his championship ambitions. Speculation has linked the Monegasque driver to potential moves to Mercedes, McLaren, or even Red Bull, depending on the opportunities available.

Encouragingly for Ferrari fans, Charles Leclerc has expressed optimism about the team’s 2026 car after testing it in the simulator, describing it as “very positive.” Retaining the 28-year-old will depend on the team’s ability to convince him that the new car can provide genuine title-contending potential.

In summary, Charles Leclerc’s third-place finish at the United States Grand Prix showcased his strategic acumen, tyre management skills, and relentless competitive spirit. Ferrari will be keen to build on this momentum as the season progresses, while Charles Leclerc’s ongoing commitment to the team could be influenced by the car’s performance in the near future. The focus now shifts to the Mexican Grand Prix, which takes place in just a few days.
