Charles Leclerc Highlights Ferrari’s 2025 Frustrations Amid McLaren’s Dominance
Charles Leclerc has openly acknowledged the widespread disappointment within Ferrari following a challenging 2025 Formula 1 season. The Monegasque driver described the campaign as underwhelming, reflecting the team’s collective frustration at falling short of championship ambitions.
Heading into the season, Ferrari had high expectations after finishing the previous year strongly and narrowly missing out on the 2024 Constructors’ Championship to McLaren by just 14 points. The arrival of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton had added further optimism, with hopes that the Maranello-based team could finally reclaim the top spot in Formula 1 for the first time since 2008.
However, those ambitions have not materialized. McLaren has surged ahead, establishing a dominant lead over the field. With seven races remaining, the British team requires just 13 points at the Singapore Grand Prix to secure consecutive Constructors’ Championships—a feat Ferrari last achieved in the early 1990s. Meanwhile, Ferrari finds itself embroiled in a tight battle for second place with Mercedes and Red Bull. Despite holding second position for much of the season, the Italian outfit has recently slipped to third, with only 20 points separating the three contenders.
Leclerc Reflects on Ferrari’s Disappointment
Charles Leclerc explained that the lack of victories and championship contention has been a source of frustration for the entire team. He emphasized that Ferrari’s goal has always been to compete at the very top, not to settle for podiums or lower positions. Every member of the team, he suggested, is acutely aware of the need to improve and close the gap to the front-runners.
The driver also addressed the contrast between Ferrari and its competitors, highlighting the challenge of understanding what has allowed McLaren to pull ahead. Charles Leclerc noted that while Ferrari, Mercedes, and Red Bull made incremental progress from 2024 to 2025, McLaren appeared to discover a breakthrough that has propelled their performance. Identifying and implementing similar gains is now Ferrari’s priority as the team works to remain competitive in the remaining races.
Challenges and Lessons from the Season
Despite finishing fifth and sixth in the drivers’ standings respectively, with Charles Leclerc claiming five podiums, Ferrari remains the only leading team yet to secure a Grand Prix win this year. The 27-year-old admitted that pinpointing the exact areas where the SF-25 is falling short is complex, acknowledging that while the team is aware of its weaknesses, translating that knowledge into tangible improvements requires significant effort and development work.
Charles Leclerc credited McLaren for achieving a performance leap that other teams have struggled to replicate. He also noted that Red Bull appears to have addressed some of its own deficiencies, visible in recent races, while Ferrari continues to analyze and test potential solutions. The focus remains on understanding the areas of weakness and finding the technical and strategic methods to regain competitiveness.
As the 2025 Formula 1 season progresses, Ferrari’s priority is to leverage the insights gained from competitors like McLaren and Red Bull to strengthen the team’s performance. The 27-year-old driver remains determined to push the SF-25 to its limits and support the Scuderia in closing the gap to the front. Analysts suggest that how Ferrari adapts over the remaining races could provide critical momentum heading into the 2026 Formula 1 season, when new regulations may offer the opportunity for a genuine championship challenge.
