In last weekend’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at the Imola circuit, concerns were raised about the reliability of the Maranello Power Unit. Despite this, Charles Leclerc clarified the situation regarding the Ferrari Power Unit and shared his thoughts on the differences with McLaren and Red Bull.
In today’s press conference ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, one of the topics addressed to Charles Leclerc was the Power Unit, which had raised some alarms at Imola. However, these concerns seem to have subsided as Charles Leclerc clarified the status of the Ferrari Power Unit and provided initial insights on the comparisons with Red Bull and McLaren.
At the home GP for the Scuderia, Charles Leclerc was forced to install the third unit after fitting the second unit on his SF-24 in the Miami Grand Prix. In the press conference, Charles Leclerc sought to calm the situation, explaining that there is no cause for concern. Over the weekend, another topic was the gap with Red Bull and McLaren in terms of electric power delivery. At the end of the race, the Monegasque driver suggested that McLaren and Red Bull might have different energy strategies.
“No, it’s not a concern,” the Monegasque driver stated in the media session at the Monaco GP when asked about the underperformance of the Ferrari power unit – “Obviously, we saw it a bit in the last race. We also saw it in Jeddah, but I think it’s more about how we manage everything. It’s not something fixed that we can’t change in the short term, so we just need to look into it, but it’s not a big issue. We have conducted a thorough analysis on this matter. It seems that at Imola, Red Bull and McLaren benefited from their strategy,” he commented. “We lost a bit of time, so we checked.” – he pointed out.
After calming the situation regarding electric power, Charles Leclerc shared his thoughts on the influence of the Power Unit at the Monaco circuit. The principality’s track is known for not being very demanding in terms of power, as it does not allow full exploitation of the engine’s power, but it still requires excellent power delivery to exit the numerous slow corners effectively.
“I don’t think it will make much difference here. The situation is very different. However, it can be useful for the rest of the season, so we have done a proper analysis on our part and I’m sure we will grow from this.” – the Ferrari driver concluded ahead of the Grand Prix weekend in front of his home fans.
