Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc has opened up about the improvements he feels are absolutely are necessary for the Maranello team to be able to challenge and defeat Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in the 2023 Formula 1 season, when the Dutchman will attempt to win his a third consecutive F1 title.
The Dutchman secured his second title in a row after the Japanese Grand Prix at the Suzuka circuit, following Charles Leclerc’s five-second time penalty for an incident with Sergio Perez on the last lap of the race. This relegated the Ferrari driver to third place in Japan.
However, given the fact that Max Verstappen has won 12 races from the 18 events which took place so far in 2022, the Ferrari driver admitted a few weeks ago that there was no hope to recover the huge gap in the Drivers’ standings, despite the fact that the Maranello team started the 2022 F1 season in a very promising manner, by winning the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Australian Grand Prix, two of the first three rounds of 2022.
When questioned about what went wrong for the Italian side following a great start to the current F1 campaign and how Ferrari’s series of errors can be avoided next season, Charles Leclerc pointed out that “we need to focus on ourselves. [We must] try to execute well the Sundays because performance is not what we lacked this year. If we look from the first race to now, we’ve always been strong and the performance was always good enough to actually fight for wins apart from some offs, but there aren’t many.” – the Monegasque driver added.

One of the main problems for Scuderia Ferrari this season, alongside the power unit reliability issues that the Italian side is confident it can sort out for 2023, has been its strategic awareness, with questionable strategy calls leading to many points lost by the Monegasque driver, as was the case in Monte Carlo, at Silverstone and at the Hungaroring circuit ahead of the summer break.
“It’s mostly about trying to put everything together come the Sunday – strategy, tyre management. That’s what we are focusing on at the moment. And this is the step that we’ll have to do next year in order to fight for the championship.” – Charles Leclerc concluded.
