After scoring two stunning race victories in the first three rounds of the 2022 Formula One season, Charles Leclerc is currently leading the drivers’ championship for the first time in his career, and can enjoy a solid 34-point gap over Mercedes driver George Russell, who is second thanks to his consistency in this start of the season, despite Mercedes being only the third force behind Ferrari and Red Bull.
The Maranello team’s upturn in form has been confirm by its best start to a Formula 1 championship in the V6 hybrid era, as it attempts to end a 15-year wait for a drivers’ title.
For now Ferrari is focused on taking each race at a time and battle now moves at Imola, where the Maranallo team hopes to experience another memorable weekend, this time in front of the Italian Tifosi. One major aspect is the fact that the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix weekend will also be the first of three sprint race weekends for the 2022 Formula 1 season. The race on Saturday will decide the grid for Sunday’s Grand Prix at Imola, while more points are also awarded for the highest placed finishers in 2022.
Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc was asked about how the special race weekend format could impact the events and admitted that he does not know if Imola will produce an exciting first sprint race this year, given the track characteristics of the Italian circuit: “I had completely forgotten that we have a sprint race there,” – Charles Leclerc explained in response to a question from RaceFans after the Australian Grand Prix – “There are a lot of things that are going to be quite crazy in Imola for us and obviously other that it will also be a race weekend where we’ll have a sprint race. Whether it’s the right track to do so or not, I don’t know – I think we’ll have the answer after the weekend. With these cars, also, maybe it’s a bit easier to follow, so hopefully it should be an exciting sprint race and race.” – the Ferrari driver concluded.
