It wasn’t the ideal start to the weekend at Montreal, where the Canadian Grand Prix will take place on Sunday. In fact, the first two free practice sessions at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit were heavily affected by the weather, with rain being the undisputed protagonist in both hours of free practice available to the teams. A session that forced the teams, including Ferrari, to use all three different types of compounds, wet, intermediate, and dry, with their drivers, managing to gather a lot of information despite the few laps completed by the end of the day.
For the Scuderia led by Frédéric Vasseur, however, it was not possible to fully understand what will happen during the weekend in Quebec and what the real standings might be, as the track on the St. Lawrence River is in a state of constant evolution, making it virtually impossible to make comparisons with other cars or to complete in-depth work programs.
In both of the (not very indicative) free practice sessions, Charles Leclerc showed excellent pace with his SF-24, completing some great laps, even overcoming a small mistake like a spin at the hairpin during the second free practice session, maximizing the little time available, especially in FP1 where, between the rain and the red flag caused by Zhou, the remaining time for the teams was about 20 minutes. In FP2, the rain continued to fall on the track, limiting laps, but the final part was more regular and certainly more indicative.
Just after getting out of his car, the Monegasque driver commented on the session. Charles Leclerc first highlighted the significant difficulties related to the weather, but saw the positive side of having completed a long series of laps to fully understand the behavior of a changing track.
“Today there wasn’t much to learn, as the conditions were very different every time we went out with our car. We did quite a few laps during the day, so that’s a very positive thing.”
Finally, Charles Leclerc shifted the focus to qualifying, showing considerable confidence due to the sensations gathered on the Canadian Friday: “I can’t wait for tomorrow to try to put everything together and to try to have a great qualifying session.” – the Ferrari driver concluded at the end of the second free practice session for the 2024 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix.
