Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc will have a new engine for the race in the Netherlands, which puts him at risk of a penalty. The Maranello team has installed a new engine for Charles Leclerc ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix weekend. The Monegasque driver has already run with his fourth power unit (the maximum allowed for the season) during the first free practice session.
As previously mentioned by Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur, the Italian side arrives at the Zandvoort circuit without any updates, using the same spec that was used at the 7.004-kilometre Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. However, there is optimism within the team, as they seem to have understood the issues that were limiting the SF-24.
Regarding Charles Leclerc’s engine in the Netherlands, the FIA has issued a statement to explain specifically what has been fitted to the car. In addition to the internal combustion engine, Charles Leclerc’s car also has a new turbo, MGU-K, and exhaust system.
To clarify, the Monegasque is not at risk of a penalty, so he will not face any sanctions this weekend. However, he has reached the allowed limit. This means that with the next change, he will be penalized. Both the turbo and MGU-K have also reached the numerical limit allowed for the 2024 Formula 1 championship (this is the fourth for both).
On Thursday, during the media day ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc spoke about various topics, including Ferrari’s season and his relationship with Carlos Sainz. Regarding the Spaniard, the #16 driver shared how Carlos Sainz had confided in him about his future and which team might be the right choice for next year.
“Mostly he discussed it with his father and his team. But we talked about it. Sometimes he asked what I would do in his place, and those kinds of discussions,” Charles Leclerc said yesterday.
The two Ferrari cars finished the first free practice session with Carlos Sainz in P4 and Charles Leclerc in P13.
