Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc reflects on his bond with Carlos Sainz, his teammate at Ferrari, following the radio tensions in the first part of the 2023 Formula One season
Much has been said about the relationship between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. Many believe it’s a pairing destined to explode. And indeed, there has been some tension between the two, especially over the team radio messages which we heard during the current championship. Nothing exceptional, one might think. And indeed, that’s how Charles Leclerc sees it too. The Monegasque driver, interviewed by Motorsport Italy (you can read the full interview here), discussed his connection with his teammate, refuting what circulates on social media.
“I’m quite active on social media, so I’ve heard and read a lot,” Charles explains. “In reality, I believe it’s all a bit exaggerated compared to the reality of things. I have a great relationship with Carlos,” he emphasizes. “Outside of the car, we know how to work together, and I can say that we get along well also because we share various interests.” – the Monegasque pointed out.

And the radio tensions? According to Charles Leclerc, it’s part of the game. After all, Formula 1 is also, and above all, about rivalry.

“At the same time, there’s also a lot of competitiveness between us. We’re in Formula 1; personally, I love the sport because there’s competition, and it’s fantastic that it’s like that,” confirms the Ferrari number 16 – “What has been heard on the radio on occasion is something that is part of being competitive, and both of us are. We want to achieve the best possible result overall, and I find all of this normal.”
Normal, because, after all, being a Ferrari driver also entails this: “We are both Ferrari drivers, and we know that we are probably under the spotlight more often than others, but that’s okay. What matters is that within the team, we have a good relationship and work towards the same goals.” – Charles concluded on this matter.
