Charles Leclerc has shed light on the technical and setup changes that finally allowed him to unlock the full potential of Ferrari’s SF-26, following a stunning victory at the British Grand Prix. After several difficult weekends spent searching for confidence behind the wheel, the Monegasque believes the Scuderia has finally found a direction capable of delivering consistent front-running performances.
Ferrari arrived at Silverstone expecting to limit the damage on a circuit that, on paper, should have suited Mercedes far more than the Italian team. Instead, the Maranello-based outfit exceeded expectations throughout the weekend. Lewis Hamilton secured Sprint pole position, Ferrari displayed competitive race pace from the opening practice sessions, and Sunday ended with Charles Leclerc standing on the top step of the podium while Lewis Hamilton completed a double podium finish for the Scuderia.
The result marked one of Ferrari’s strongest all-round performances of the 2026 Formula 1 season and suggested that the development programme introduced over recent races is finally paying dividends.
Ferrari finally solved the SF-26 balance issues
Speaking after his Silverstone victory, Charles Leclerc explained that the breakthrough was not the result of one major upgrade alone, but rather of countless hours spent alongside Ferrari’s engineers analysing data and searching for the source of the handling issues that had prevented him from feeling completely comfortable with the SF-26.
According to Charles Leclerc, a detailed review of Friday’s telemetry uncovered an important clue. Overnight, Ferrari adjusted the car based on those findings, and the difference was immediately noticeable once he returned to the circuit.
The Ferrari driver explained that he had been working closely with the team for several races to understand why he never felt completely at ease with the car. After studying the data collected on Friday, he identified a characteristic that appeared to be unsettling the balance of the SF-26. Although he already hinted after Saturday’s Sprint that progress had been made, he admitted the real test would come during qualifying and, even more importantly, over a full Grand Prix distance.
Charles Leclerc added that the revised setup immediately inspired greater confidence. He felt significantly more comfortable during qualifying, while the race confirmed that the improvements were genuine rather than temporary, as the positive feeling remained from the opening laps all the way to the chequered flag.
Strong Ferrari pace rewarded after Mercedes‘ setback
Charles Leclerc controlled much of the race with impressive consistency, although Ferrari also benefited from Mercedes’ reliability problems. Andrea Kimi Antonelli appeared capable of mounting a serious challenge during the closing stages thanks to fresher tyres, but a mechanical issue ended the Italian rookie’s charge before he could attack the Ferrari.
A late Safety Car then helped neutralise the race, allowing the Monegasque to comfortably manage the restart and secure one of the most significant victories of his Formula 1 career.
While fortune played a role, Ferrari’s overall pace throughout the weekend demonstrated that the team had taken a genuine step forward. The SF-26 looked competitive over a single lap, managed tyre degradation effectively, and showed improved energy deployment compared to previous events.
Charles Leclerc remains focused despite growing championship optimism
Although Ferrari significantly reduced the gap to Mercedes in both performance and confidence, Charles Leclerc made it clear that he is not allowing himself to become distracted by championship calculations.
The Ferrari driver indicated that his priority is to preserve the positive feeling he has finally rediscovered with the SF-26. In his view, maintaining that level of confidence is far more important than thinking about the standings at this stage of the season, because consistent performances will naturally produce the results needed to remain in the title fight.
With Spa-Francorchamps next on the Formula 1 calendar, Ferrari now faces another important opportunity to prove that Silverstone was not an isolated success. If Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton can replicate this level of competitiveness on another demanding circuit, the conversation surrounding Ferrari’s championship ambitions will only become louder.
