A Friday morning to forget for Charles Leclerc at the Montreal circuit, as he hit the wall early in FP1 for the Canadian Grand Prix. Just 15 minutes into the first practice session, the Ferrari driver crashed due to a braking error between Turns 3 and 4.
The Monegasque lost the rear of his SF-25 after locking up the front tires entering Turn 3, running wide onto the grass under braking. From there, his trajectory tightened toward the inside of Turn 4, where Charles Leclerc struck the barriers, destroying both the front-left and rear-left suspension on his car.
Charles Leclerc crashes in FP1 in Canada: what happened to the Monegasque driver
The team radio broadcast live on TV was telling. After the impact, Charles Leclerc immediately reported, “I’m in the wall…” and then calmly admitted his mistake: “Yeah, my bad, I should’ve gone straight. I thought I will just make it but I clipped.”
A clear admission of fault, reflecting the driver’s frustration at a moment when Ferrari needed a solid start to the weekend after the disappointment at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona. The damaged SF-25 was brought back to the garage for repairs, with Ferrari mechanics facing a race against time to get the Monegasque back out for FP2.
The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, notoriously tricky at the beginning of race weekends due to low grip and the mix of high- and low-speed sections, claimed its first victim. It remains to be seen whether Charles Leclerc can quickly regain the confidence needed to tackle qualifying and the race effectively. But the start has been nothing short of disastrous.
