After his move to Williams in 2025, Carlos Sainz admitted he is ready to make all the technical knowledge gained at Ferrari available to his future team, particularly regarding some secrets of the power unit. A move that, indirectly, could also benefit Mercedes, the official engine supplier for the Grove-based team.
During an interview given in the paddock on media day at the Bahrain GP, Carlos Sainz openly stated that he is providing feedback on what Ferrari does better in certain aspects of engine performance. He is doing this in the hope that both Williams and Mercedes can improve their power units.
Carlos Sainz “steals” to help Williams (and Mercedes)
A statement that has not gone unnoticed, especially in an era where managing technical information between rival teams is always a sensitive topic. However, Carlos Sainz clarified that this is a natural step for a driver who changes teams: “When you move from one team to another, you inevitably take with you experiences, feelings, and technical understandings. It’s part of the game.”
Carlos Sainz also spoke about the differences — and similarities — among the various engines currently on the grid: “The power units are very different from each other in some aspects, but also very similar in others.”
Considering that Williams uses Mercedes engines, the information Carlos Sainz is passing on to the British team could also be valuable for Brackley, which has been battling Ferrari on the engine front for years. While this isn’t about confidential data, a driver’s firsthand experience can still provide valuable insights on engine maps, response, hybrid management, and race behavior.
In a championship that is increasingly competitive on the technical front, every detail can make a difference. And in his transition from Maranello to Grove, Carlos Sainz promises to be not just a driver, but also a bridge between two different engine philosophies.
