Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz says it shows the type of sportsman Daniel Ricciardo is after he came to the Ferrari motorhome to apologise after he hit the Maranello team’s driver in the opening lap of the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, which ended his race.
Carlos Sainz did not score any points in the last two races of the 2022 Formula One season and the latest disappointment was the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola in front of the Tifosi, where Carlos Sainz was looking for a strong result, but once again saw his race finish prematurely after being hit the McLaren of Daniel Ricciardo.
The incident sent Carlos Sainz and Daniel Ricciardo in the gravel, but the Australian kept the traction to drive his McLaren back out of the gravel and continue in the race, while Carlos Sainz was beached and out. This was the second time in as many races that the Spaniard ended before the race even started, having spun out at the Albert Park circuit in Australia. After the race in Italy, Daniel Ricciardo went to the Maranello team’s HQ to apologise personally to Carlos Sainz, a move which the Spaniard respected greatly.
“As a sportsman, Daniel is honoured that he came to the Ferrari pit box immediately after the race and apologised to me. All the mechanics noticed that and thanked him for the gesture. Unfortunately, it was me who got hit, and that was immediately after the crash in Melbourne. That’s just the way it is now” – the Ferrari driver explained.
When asked if this moment is similar to McLaren championships from two and three years ago, when Carlos Sainz was not able to score any points in the opening three events, while in 2020 scoring only one top-five finish in the opening seven races, Carlos Sainz acknowledged the comparison, but explained that from there he came back strong.
And now after a difficult start to the 2022 Formula 1 season, the Spaniard is confident things will also improve, believing that his speed is there.

“You can compare that. It’s similar to the two McLaren years. But then the three quarters after the bad first quarter were always very strong. It’s part of life and sport that things sometimes go better and sometimes worse. But I’m confident that I can turn it around. Those were two weekends now, in Australia and Imola, where the speed was there and I felt comfortable in the car. I think I have made a step. Now I’ve just had bad luck, but the good times will come. It’s always like that in this sport. I just have to stay patient and not lose heart now.” – the Ferrari driver concluded.
