Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz wanted to point out his “special relationship” with Formula 1 fans following recent criticism from several F1 drivers regarding the abusive behaviour of fans in the Mexico City Grand Prix paddock during last weekend’s event at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
Specialized security provided increased security controls for the Mexican weekend with personnel being moved to and from the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez following several incidents in the lead-up to the race weekend. AlphaTauri pointed out that several unauthorised spectators were present in its garage, while French driver Pierre Gasly revealed he preferred to stay inside the AlphaTauri hospitality unit as he was afraid of being “mobbed”.
Formula 1 drivers and team members were followed by hundreds of fans as they were moving inside the paddock, and effectively had to be transferred between hospitality and their garages by a circle of security.
McLaren’s Lando Norris was most vocal on this matter and asked Formula 1 to restrict the access in the paddock for fans which go too far. On the other hand, Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz confirmed he relished the frenzied atmosphere created by the fans:

“I love it. I love having the fans around me, I love having everyone around us, cheering us. I guess, especially because I am Latin, I have a special relationship [in Mexico].” – the Ferrari driver explained, when asked on the subject at the end of the Mexico City Grand Prix.
But at the same time Carlos Sainz asked for respect and boundaries, while welcoming the attention from fans, in order to make sure safety could be maintained for everyone: “I only ask everyone to stay calm. We are in a paddock. Don’t push and don’t shout too much, but apart from that, I am totally fine with it.” – the Spaniard concluded.
