Red Bull Racing Dutch driver Max Verstappen continued his dominance in the 2022 Formula One campaign even after mathematically securing the F1 world title, by winning the Mexican Grand Prix last weekend and therefore breaking the record for most victories in a single F1 season.
His triumph at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez was the 14th this year, as the former record was held by Michael Schumacher (2004) and Sebastian Vettel (2013), each with 13 wins.
Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz feels that this impressive achievement of Max Verstappen could have been prevented or at least made more difficult by Scuderia Ferrari, especially if Carlos had kept up with his Maranello teammate Charles Leclerc in the first part of the 2022 Formula 1 season, when the F1-75 proved to be the fastest car on the grid in most races:
“You never expect that especially when you have a good car at the beginning,” Carlos Sainz admitted, in an interview after the Mexican Grand Prix – “I wish now that I would have felt a bit more comfortable at the beginning of the season, to make things also a bit more complicated for Max and together we Charles put up a bit more of a fight. Max has [had] an amazing season, he deserves it. I think they are dominant, now the Red Bull is starting to be a dominant car. But at the beginning of the season, for sure [that] is where he did a tremendous job. My target for next year is to start at the level that I am [at] now, which is a pretty decent level and make things more complicated for Max.” – the Spaniard pointed out.

Given the fact that Mercedes has gradually recovered the deficit to Scuderia Ferrari and in Mexico City the W13 proved even faster than the F1-75 car for the first time this season, Carlos Sainz feels the Maranello team will should expect Mercedes to be involved in the battles for race wins next year, but is confident the Italian side will be able to design a another race-winning car and most importantly will use the lessons learned this championship to improve for 2023:
“New year, new car, new regs even with the floor, we have another chance and I fully trust that the team will produce another great car like the car that we had this year, and that we will learn from the mistakes done this year. I’m ready to fight and looking forward also for Mercedes [as] it looks like they’re going to join us at the front.” – Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz concluded.
