Lewis Hamilton’s first victory as a Ferrari driver has become one of the defining moments of the 2026 Formula 1 season, but former Scuderia driver Carlos Sainz believes there is an important reason why the seven-time world champion has been able to rediscover his best form so quickly.
The Barcelona Grand Prix not only delivered Ferrari’s first victory of the campaign but also re-established Lewis Hamilton as a serious contender in both championship battles. After months of questions surrounding his adaptation to life at Maranello, the British driver finally produced the type of performance Ferrari fans had dreamed about when his signing was announced.
The result was celebrated throughout the paddock. Rival teams, engineers and drivers all acknowledged the significance of seeing Formula 1’s most successful driver claim his first win with the sport’s most iconic team.
However, Carlos Sainz believes the foundations of Lewis Hamilton’s resurgence may have been laid long before the lights went out in Barcelona.
Carlos Sainz points to Formula 1’s new era as a turning point
Reflecting on Lewis Hamilton’s rise, Carlos Sainz suggested that the latest regulation changes have played a major role in helping the Ferrari driver return to the front of the grid.
The Spaniard drew parallels with his own career experiences, explaining that driver performance is often heavily influenced by how naturally a car suits individual driving styles. According to Carlos Sainz, there are occasions when talented drivers find themselves battling machinery that simply does not complement their strengths, forcing them into lengthy adaptation processes.
In Carlos Sainz’s view, Lewis Hamilton spent much of the previous regulatory cycle driving cars that never fully matched his preferences. While the British driver remained competitive, the connection between driver and machine rarely appeared as natural as it had during his most dominant years.
The former Ferrari driver argued that changing regulations can completely alter that equation. A driver who struggles with one generation of cars may suddenly flourish when technical rules evolve and different vehicle characteristics come into play.
For Carlos Sainz, the current regulations appear ideally suited to Lewis Hamilton’s driving style. He suggested that without the shift away from the previous generation of Formula 1 cars, the seven-time world champion may have found it much more difficult to return to the level currently being displayed.
At the same time, Carlos Sainz stressed that adapting successfully still requires exceptional ability. Simply receiving a more suitable car does not automatically guarantee victories, particularly at a team as demanding as Ferrari.
More than just regulations: Lewis Hamilton’s contribution cannot be ignored
While the technical rule changes have undoubtedly altered the competitive landscape, attributing Lewis Hamilton’s success solely to the regulations would overlook several other important factors.
Since arriving at Ferrari, the British driver has invested significant effort in helping shape the development direction of the SF-26. Team principal Fred Vasseur has repeatedly praised Lewis Hamilton’s commitment, technical feedback and willingness to immerse himself fully in the project even during difficult periods.
Ferrari has also undergone substantial changes behind the scenes. Improved operational execution, stronger strategic decision-making and a series of successful upgrades have all contributed to the team’s rise during 2026.
The Barcelona victory itself was not simply the result of a fast car. Ferrari executed an ambitious three-stop strategy perfectly, while Lewis Hamilton delivered outstanding tyre management and race pace under pressure. Those elements required experience, confidence and precision rather than merely favourable regulations.
Several former drivers have pointed out that the seven-time world champion appears mentally rejuvenated compared to recent seasons. The confidence visible on track, the stronger relationship with race engineer Carlo Santi and the growing trust within the team have all played important roles in his revival.
What Lewis Hamilton’s rise means for Charles Leclerc
One unavoidable consequence of Lewis Hamilton’s resurgence is the increasing scrutiny surrounding Charles Leclerc’s position within Ferrari.
For years, Charles Leclerc was viewed as the cornerstone of Ferrari’s long-term future and the driver around whom the team would build its championship ambitions. However, the competitive balance inside the garage has shifted noticeably this season.
While Lewis Hamilton celebrated victory in Barcelona, Charles Leclerc endured another frustrating weekend. A qualifying accident followed by a race-ending technical issue prevented the Monegasque from capitalising on the improved pace of the SF-26. Despite the disappointment, the Monegasque publicly supported his teammate and recognised the significance of Ferrari’s success. Nevertheless, the gap between the two drivers has become a growing topic of discussion throughout the Formula 1 paddock.
Some former drivers now believe the Briton has emerged as Ferrari’s strongest championship hope, while others argue that Charles Leclerc still possesses the raw speed required to reverse the situation once his confidence and momentum return.
Ferrari finally seeing the Lewis Hamilton it signed
Regardless of how much influence the regulation changes have had, one conclusion is becoming increasingly difficult to dispute: Ferrari is finally witnessing the version of Lewis Hamilton it expected to receive when it completed one of the most significant driver signings in Formula 1 history.
The combination of a more suitable technical package, an improving SF-26, a stronger engineering relationship and renewed self-belief has transformed the competitive outlook for the British driver. Carlos Sainz may believe that the new rules provided the spark that reignited Lewis Hamilton’s career, but turning that opportunity into victories still required world-class execution. Barcelona demonstrated exactly that.
For Ferrari, the most encouraging aspect may be that there is still room for further progress. Additional upgrades are expected throughout the season, while both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc continue working closely with the team to unlock even more performance.
If the Spanish Grand Prix was the beginning rather than the peak of Ferrari’s resurgence, the battle between Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc and the championship frontrunners could become one of the defining stories of the remainder of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
