Lewis Hamilton’s first Grand Prix victory with Ferrari was the result of much more than a strong race weekend in Barcelona. Behind the celebrations, the trophies and the emotional scenes on the podium lies a story of internal change, persistence and a relationship that proved critical to the seven-time world champion’s revival.
Following Ferrari’s breakthrough success at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Lewis Hamilton took the opportunity to highlight the role played by team principal Fred Vasseur, describing him as one of the key figures responsible for turning a difficult project into a winning one.
The Barcelona victory ended a lengthy drought for both driver and team. It was Lewis Hamilton’s first triumph since his Mercedes success in Belgium in 2024 and his maiden victory since joining Ferrari. The achievement also placed him in Formula 1 history as the first driver to win Grands Prix with McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari.
However, the path to that milestone was far from straightforward.
Ferrari faced major challenges during Lewis Hamilton’s first season
When Lewis Hamilton arrived in Maranello, expectations were enormous. The combination of Formula 1’s most successful driver and the sport’s most famous team immediately generated excitement throughout the paddock.
Reality, however, proved significantly more complicated.
Throughout 2025, Ferrari struggled to provide Lewis Hamilton with a package capable of consistently challenging at the front. The British driver frequently spoke about areas where he felt improvements were needed, both from a technical and operational perspective.
One of the most significant challenges involved braking performance. Throughout much of his debut season with Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton never appeared fully comfortable with the feeling generated by the braking package available to him. The issue became increasingly important because confidence under braking is one of the foundations of Lewis Hamilton’s driving style. The ability to attack corner entries, manage tyre wear and extract lap time often depends on absolute trust in the car’s behaviour during braking phases.
Eventually, Ferrari approved a move toward Carbon Industrie brake discs integrated within the team’s existing braking system. The change, introduced during the season, gradually helped th former Mercedes driver regain the confidence that had been missing during difficult periods of his Ferrari career.
Many observers inside the paddock now believe that adjustment played an important role in the dramatic improvement that followed.
Fred Vasseur backed Lewis Hamilton’s requests
Reflecting on Ferrari’s journey, Lewis Hamilton made it clear that Fred Vasseur’s support was instrumental throughout the process.
The British driver explained that the Ferrari team principal had been the person who made the move to Maranello possible in the first place. More importantly, Fred Vasseur remained committed to the project even when results failed to arrive immediately.
According to Lewis Hamilton, his arrival represented a significant challenge for Ferrari’s existing structure. The seven-time world champion acknowledged that he has always been an extremely demanding competitor who is willing to speak openly whenever he identifies areas requiring improvement. The Briton admitted that his direct approach created additional pressure for Fred Vasseur, who was already responsible for managing one of the most scrutinised organisations in world sport.
The Ferrari driver suggested that integrating his expectations, experience and working methods into an established team environment was not always an easy process. At times, significant adjustments were required both from the driver and from the organisation itself.
Despite those challenges, Lewis Hamilton explained that Fred Vasseur never lost confidence in the project. The Ferrari boss continued supporting him publicly and privately while also remaining receptive to feedback regarding areas where the team could improve.
Most importantly, Lewis Hamilton revealed that several of the changes he had been pushing for were ultimately approved after extensive discussions with Ferrari management.
The British driver indicated that some of those requests required considerable persistence. Nevertheless, Fred Vasseur eventually gave the green light to a number of important modifications, decisions Lewis Hamilton now believes were fundamental to Ferrari’s recent progress.
A partnership built on trust
One of the recurring themes of Ferrari’s resurgence has been the growing trust between Lewis Hamilton and Fred Vasseur.
The two men share a long-standing relationship dating back to their early careers, and that connection appears to have played a major role during difficult moments over the past eighteen months.
While external criticism intensified during Ferrari’s struggles, Fred Vasseur consistently defended Lewis Hamilton and repeatedly argued that the results would come once the necessary foundations were in place.
The team principal’s faith now appears justified. Barcelona demonstrated what Ferrari can achieve when the car, strategy and driver all operate at their highest level. Lewis Hamilton controlled the race with authority, managed tyre degradation expertly and delivered the type of performance that once made him a dominant force in Formula 1.
At the same time, Charles Leclerc endured another frustrating weekend after a qualifying setback and a race-ending technical issue prevented him from taking advantage of Ferrari’s pace. While Charles Leclerc remains a crucial part of Ferrari’s future, the momentum within the team has shifted significantly toward the Briton over recent races.
Barcelona may be only the beginning
For Ferrari, the most encouraging aspect of the Spanish Grand Prix victory may be that it did not feel accidental.
The SF-26 benefited from an effective upgrade package, the strategy team executed flawlessly and Lewis Hamilton looked increasingly comfortable throughout the weekend. The performance suggested that Ferrari’s progress is rooted in genuine improvements rather than favourable circumstances alone.
Much of that progress can be traced back to difficult conversations and important decisions made behind the scenes. Lewis Hamilton’s willingness to challenge established thinking, combined with Fred Vasseur’s willingness to listen and act, helped create an environment capable of producing meaningful change. As Ferrari prepares for the next phase of the championship, the partnership between Lewis Hamilton and Fred Vasseur appears stronger than ever. If Barcelona proved anything, it is that persistence, trust and decisive leadership can eventually transform frustration into success.
For a team chasing its first world title in years, that lesson could prove every bit as valuable as the victory itself.
