Despite the fact that he is not very often listed at the same level of Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton or Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz pointed out the fact that Scuderia Ferrari is aware of his his worth and his skills. At the same time, the Spanish driver confirmed he wants to extend his contract with the Maranello team and hopes everything will be worked out ahead of the start of the 2022 Formula 1 season.
Carlos Sainz has raced for four different teams during his Formula 1 career and very often found himself written off by pundits when it came to his prospects of fighting with the best. The situation did not change in 2021, when the Spaniard joined Scuderia Ferrari. It therefore came as a surprise for many when Carlos Sainz finished his first season with Ferrari in fith place in the Drivers’ standings, ahead of his former McLaren teammate Lando Norris and his current Maranello teammate Charles Leclerc.
This means that Carlos Sainz was beaten by his teammate only two times so far, in 2015 by Verstappen and 2018 by Nico Hülkenberg. In a recent interview for Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera, the Ferrari driver explained: “Not everyone treats me as an outsider. Anyone who understands this sport, anyone who has worked with me knows that I am not at all. When Mattia Binotto signed me to Ferrari he knew I could do a good job, which I know is very fast. Those who think that my level is not very high do not pay attention because they do not know Formula 1.” – he explained.

Regarding the possibility of signing a new deal with the Italian side, Carlos Sainz said: “As Mattia Binotto said, we are both satisfied, we intend to continue together and this winter is as an opportunity to find an agreement. We are trying. Becoming world champion with Ferrari is my ultimate ambition. I would like to renew as soon as possible.” – he confirmed.
In 2021, just a few days after joining the Maranello team, Carlos Sainz was asked if he would beat Charles Leclerc and at that time said “no”. Looking back at that moment, Carlos Sainz explains that was a “logical answer. I had just arrived, had a lot to learn, a very strong team-mate. However, even then I believed in myself, trust is never lacking, but I have to be realistic. Drivers like Leclerc, Norris, Verstappen or Hamilton have no weaknesses. The comparison takes place by improving every detail and it is fun to have a partner like this: you learn by observing.” – the Ferrari driver concluded.
