Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz took part in Friday’s press conference ahead of the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix and gave insight into the possible Baku setup:
“You can win through both high load or low load. The simulations show the lap time to be practically the same, choosing one setup or the other” – the Spanish driver confirmed – “You have to choose a direction and trust yourself. You need a car which gives you confidence, because you have to brake late and be close to the walls. This is a great challenge for us drivers but also for the team as regards the set-up. It’s a great circuit and I really enjoy being here and I think it’s great for Formula 1 to come here.” – Carlos Sainz explained.
The Ferrari driver was also asked about Pierre Gasly, who may leave the Red Bull team after Sergio Perez’s contract extension: It’s not easy [what he’s going through]. But thanks to Red Bull, that’s why I arrived in F1. I understand what Pierre is going through, I experienced something quite similar. This decision caused me some moments of tension with Red Bull, but I have maintained good relations with both Christian Horner and Helmut Marko and can only have words of gratitude towards them. I understand both positions, because it is difficult to find a balance between what you want and loyalty to those who have trusted you. Pierre is a good driver and he is always good on track, it is normal that he has high expectations and that he wants to find a solution which allows him to fight for wins and pole positions.” – Carlos Sainz added.
The Spanish driver was also asked about Ferrari’s Monaco strategy: “In hindsight, we would have done things differently for Charles. For me, we got the strategy right. I was in the lead before everyone switched to slicks. We chose the right strategy, but I came out behind Latifi which cost me the win.”
