Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz has expressed his opinion regarding the handover between Mattia Binotto and Frederic Vasseur in the role of team principal at the Italian side, remaining confident about the changes that the Frenchman is implementing. Despite 2023 being a transitional season for the former Alfa Romeo team principal, Frederic Vasseur has already made his mark by making some changes to the organizational structure and contributing to the recruitment of technicians.
“I don’t know, and we will probably never know,” Carlos Sainz replied in a recent interview with the Italian motorsport.it. “Personally, I believe that changes are always aimed at improving the situation.”
According to Carlos Sainz, Fred Vasseur’s arrival at Ferrari last January brought a breath of fresh air after Mattia Binotto’s management, which, in terms of results, proved to be unsuccessful. However, the French manager did not start his tenure at the helm of the Prancing Horse in the best possible way.
“I am convinced that soon we will see progress related to the work done,” Carlos continues. “We are trying many things and getting to know the car more and more. You will see that there will be a moment when things will go in the right direction.” – he pointed out.
However, it should be noted that Frederic Vasseur was not able to have a say in the preparation for the 2023 Formula 1 season, as he joined the Maranello team when the car was already in the final stages of design. Furthermore, with the new season approaching, the Frenchman could only try to familiarize himself with the team in the shortest possible time.
While Frederic Vasseur couldn’t do much in terms of sporting direction on one hand, on the other hand, he immediately made his mark by making some unpopular decisions for the good of the team. After years of criticism, the first one to “pay the price” was Inaki Rueda. The Spaniard was removed from his role as chief strategist at the beginning of the 2023 Formula One season, making way for Ravin Jain.

Subsequently, Laurent Mekies also decided to leave the team to move to AlphaTauri in Faenza. Moreover, according to Frederic Vasseur, Ferrari has hired engineers “destined to make noise” for the upcoming seasons, and some technicians from Red Bull are already operational in Maranello.
The first real championship in which Frederic Vasseur’s work can be judged 100% will be 2024. Scuderia Ferrari will be called upon to respond to Red Bull, Mercedes, and Aston Martin. Additionally, they will have the task of starting the season with a significantly more competitive car than the SF-23 seen so far.
