Following a disappointing performance in Barcelona at the Circuit de Catalunya, the Scuderia showcased a much-improved performance in Montreal at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, securing fourth and fifth places for the Maranello team. Both Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc expressed satisfaction with the car’s performance, particularly their ability to maintain a long stint on Medium tires without pitting during the early Safety Car period.
The nature of the Canadian circuit, featuring fewer high-speed corners and more chicanes and a hairpin, played a crucial role in Ferrari’s improved performance compared to Montmelo.
Carlos Sainz emphasizes that the SF-23’s main weakness in high-speed situations was reaffirmed early on during the Montreal weekend:
“I knew Barcelona wasn’t a good track for us, and that Canada was going to be better,” Carlos Sainz pointed out in an interview for the media, after his fourth fifth place finish in the last five races. It was confirmed on Friday pace, that lower degradation circuits and ones with slower speed corners we are stronger at, and [it meant] we could show a bit more our true pace [in the race].” – the Ferrari man explained.

“Our pace in Austria will depend a lot on the characteristics of the circuit, our pace varies a lot depending on that. We see places like Monaco or Canada we are stronger at than places with higher speed corners like Barcelona, where we struggle a bit more, so I think we will see variations in our competitiveness.” – Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz concluded ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix.
