Italian journalist Giorgio Terruzzi began the latest episode of his podcast with a contrarian view. Despite the satisfaction of the drivers and team principal with the improvement of Scuderia Ferrari, the journalist believes that the performance seen in Montreal is not something to celebrate. The reason being that the Canadian circuit is not particularly demanding for the cars, nor does it require high tire consumption. Therefore, Sunday’s race cannot lead to the conclusion that the updates are working so well after all.
“So, Ferrari performed better, but the drivers finished fourth and fifth. There’s no reason for such a big celebration, especially since Ferrari remains the fourth force in the championship,” the expert began. “There were too many mistakes from everyone during qualifying, which also compromised the race on Sunday. In Canada, Mercedes did better than the Red [Ferrari], which was praised as if it had won. The SF-23 finished 18 seconds behind, and after eight races, being satisfied with such a result is not fulfilling.”
One of the reasons Ferrari received praise is the improved tire management, which has drastically gotten better in recent races after being the most critical issue for the Maranello team in this start of the 2023 Formula One season. “The tire grip has improved, and there have been positive outcomes, but it’s not like this track put them under much pressure. Nobody wore out their tires, and neither did Ferrari,” Giorgio Terruzzi stated. Furthermore, the journalist pointed out which upcoming races can serve as tests for the SF-23 updates: “The final verdict will come at Silverstone, and partially at the Austrian Grand Prix as well.” – he pointed out after the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.
