Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz has welcomed Formula 1’s recent call to remove its Q3 tyre rule starting with the 2022 championship, admitting that it makes races much fairer.
The rule, which was introduced back in 2014, required all drivers who reached Q3 to begin Sunday’s event on the tyres they used to set their quickest lap time in Q2. This rule is no longer part of the sporting regulations for the 2022 Formula 1 season, which means that all drivers are now able to decide alongside their teams which tyre to start the race on
“I think it’s more fair.” – Carlos Sainz said, in a recent interview ahead of the first free practice session for the Bahrain Grand Prix.
The regulation had been criticised by several drivers who argues that this situation did not provide the expected results and actually gave an advantage to the quickest teams because they were able to use a harder tyre compound to make it through to Q and therfore start the race on that tyre.

Carlos Sainz is aware that the rule change maye lead to teams focusing on similar and more conservative strategy options, but at the same time he feels this is a price worth paying for more equal competition for drivers.
“The only negative thing is that probably in the races that are on the limit of the two and the one-stop, everyone will elect probably a stiffer compound and the race will become a maybe an easier one-stop because you have the possibility to start on the medium. On a new medium on top, not even used. That’s the only downside. But I’m happy to take that downside because it’s a lot more fair for everyone to start a race with equal opportunity, let’s say.” – Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz concluded.
