Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto is confident that it is only a matter of time before Spanish driver Carlos Sainz will take his first Formula 1 victory, adding that this will happen “soon”.
After a difficult start to his second year alongside the Maranello team, Carlos Sainz seems to be getting more at ease with the F1-75 car and in fact came very close to winning the Canadian Grand Prix last weekend, but in the end could not take advantage of a late Safety Car to overtake the Red Bull RB18 of Max Verstappen at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. However, the Spaniard has scored in four of the last five races, including three podium finishes.
In Canada, Carlos Sainz crossed the line just under a second behind the championship leader. However, the Spanish driver has added one more race without a win, as he continues to look for that highly desired first Formula 1 victory, which Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto feels his will “soon” come:
“Carlos Sainz is driving better than at the beginning of the season and will soon take his first victory,” Mattia Binotto said in a recent interview for Corriere dello Sport – “Today he had something more and it is a pity that he did not win. Without a little mistake perhaps he would have made it, but he was good at keeping the pace and attacking until the last lap.” – he added.
Carlos Sainz has finished in second place three times in the 2022 Formula 1 season, but Canada was by far the closest he has come to securing the race win: “I gave it my all to pass the Red Bull, but to overtake here you need a bit more than two or three extra tenths. Even though I’m disappointed at not getting the win, there are many positives to take from Canada. We were the fastest on track and I felt much better in the car, being able to push constantly throughout the race.” – he added.
Scuderia Ferrari need to put together some positive results with both drivers in order to recover ground to Red Bull, who are on a run of six successive race wins and lead both championships, after the Maranello team and Charles Leclerc had a great start to the season by winning in Australia and Bahrain:

“This year we have to attack in every race,” Mattia Binotto added. “Theoretically here in Montreal we had to defend, but we have gained a little bit in the Constructors’ classification.”
Ferrari could have gained even more in Canada, especially taking into consideration the retirement of Sergio Perez, but the Maranello team’s Monegasque driver had to start from the back row as a result of several grid penalties for chaging the components of his power unit: “For Charles we knew instead that it would be a race of patience. Fifth place starting from the back is a good result. The next four races will be crucial,” Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto concluded.
