With less than a year remaining before the release of Brad Pitt’s F1 film, anticipation is building rapidly. Directed by Joseph Kosinski and co-produced by Lewis Hamilton, the film features the Hollywood star as a former driver returning to the track to mentor a rising star in the Expensify APX-GP team, played by Damson Idris. An intense rivalry soon develops between the two.

Former Scuderia Ferrari team principal and current Formula 1 chief executive officer Stefano Domenicali is confident that Brad Pitt’s F1 film will have a greater impact than Drive to Survive. The Netflix docuseries, now six seasons strong, has played a significant role in boosting Formula 1’s popularity, particularly in the United States.

“If the Netflix series was big, I believe the film—and we discussed the marketing and promotional plan in Hungary—will be massive. We will reach a new audience that isn’t currently engaged,” Stefano Domenicali stated in an interview with Motorsport.

According to the Formula 1 CEO, the film aims to “create something unique,” even though it is a work of fiction. “We can’t touch the actual racing because that’s the sport itself, but we’re incorporating different cuts and elements. We’re making a movie.” – he pointed out.

Stefano Domenicali acknowledged the challenge of keeping the action authentic during filming. “When you see it, you’ll understand what it’s all about,” he added.

The Italian manager also noted that Joseph Kosinski’s film has introduced a range of new audiovisual technologies that could potentially enhance real-life races.

Will F1 overshadow Drive to Survive? The impact of the Netflix docuseries on Formula 1 fans is well-known. Beyond increasing its popularity, it has also attracted younger generations to the pinnacle of motorsport.

While the story in F1 contains fictional elements, Stefano Domenicali assures that the technology used could revolutionize the future of Formula 1. “We are jointly developing new camera technology with different angles. So, I’d say it’s an exciting way to innovate with technologies that we’ll introduce later on.” – the former Ferrari team boss concluded.
